The 4wd on 97 dodge ram tries to self-engage.

The 4wd on my 1997 dodge ram 1500 seems to try to self-engage and I'm not sure how to correct this. I have the 5.9l v8. I've been hearing almost a groaning noise from the front end that may or may not be accompained by a vibration. Someone suggested that the 4wd was trying to self-engage. I took it to a shop and they couldn't get the truck to make the same noise/vibration. I'm the original owner and it has always been difficult to engage the 4wd when I needed it, and now it seems strange that it would be trying to engage even though I don't need it. Any help on how to correct this if, indeed, this is the problem? Thanks for the help.

SOURCE: Noise in front wheels of 97 dodge dakota

You have a wheel hub assembly with bad needle bearings. Make sure by getting the vehicle up to operating speed and cruise a curvy road. A quieting down on a right hand turn will indicate a left wheel bearing assembly,(and vice versa) and you have to put some force into the turn in order to notice the changes in the sound. You'll find one turn will be quieter than the other. I had this problem with a similar vehicle and purchased the wheel hub assembly through Rock Auto (google them. You'll be glad you did). Thirty percent cheaper than the local parts house, and they shipped the part quite quickly. Make sure, by the way, to clean out the pocket where the assembly goes in. Simply pull the wheel off, drop the caliper, and you'll see three bolts holding the assembly. Take the nut off the end of the axle shaft and be prepared to beat the old assembly off with a heavy hammer. You will not have to drop either ball joint, although you should inspect them for wear at that time. Slip the replacement assembly onto the shaft and line up the splines before trying to mount the assembly. The whole job should take you maybe about an hour, and you may not break all that much of a sweat while you're at it. Good luck and be confident. You can do this!

SOURCE: 2006 dodge ram 2500 4x4 diesel replace brake pads front and back

Straight forward job. Remove wheels, remove 2 caliper bolts per wheel, check bolts, and bushings for wear/corrosion and lubricate, remove calipers, remove brake pads, push caliper pistons into calipers, replace anti-rattle clips, put new pads in, put caliper and bolts in, put wheels on. Start truck and press brake pedal several times to take up slack and you're done.

97 S-10, manual trans, 4WD, V6. wehn I engage

The gears are binding, and the vehicle is new enough the the computer can say hell no, and pop it back out. That or the mechanical portion won't hold it in place because the gears are binding. If you need 4WD, take it in to get repaired, The techs will try it out, and test it to make sure what is wrong, trust me when they are stumped, thy get 3 or 4 other techs thinking about it. They can fix it for you. A friend of mine had this issue, except in a 98 silvarado, and when he engaged his, it did the same thing. I never asked how they fixed it, but I know he went to a dealership to do it.

There are some vaccum lines that go to your axle. there is a disconnect there and a switch that lights up your dash light when engaged. I would first make sure they are still connected and not damaged. The vaccum signal to engage and disengage comes from the top of your transfer case right under the shifter boot. To test if you disconnect is working, apply vacuum to one or the other side of the diaphram for the axle disconnect and try it out. otherwise you may have lost vacuum somewhere or you have a bad switch on your transfer case.
