First the wheel has to be removed. Then it's a good idea to remove the braking hardware(Shoes, springs etc.) for these will have to bre cleaned or replaced later in the process. There will be 4 or 5 hex head bolts circling the axle, remove these and at the same time place a small tray underneath to catch any small amount of fluid which may drip out. Next pry the axle out with your hands or a couple of matching prybars at 3:00 and 9:00 equally. The seal may be removed using a long, large flat head screwdriver blade. Use extra care not to scratch(score) the seal housing. The new seal should be installed using a seal and bushing installer kit, however, it may be done by using the old seal flipped iover and taped at a rotational method. Make sure after all is put together to measure the fluid level. This is done by placing your pinky finger into the filler hole . If there is enough fluid to coat your fingers firest knuckle than you're all set. Thank you, Dana

  1. Jack up the vehicle: Use a floor jack to lift the rear of the vehicle off the ground.
  2. Remove the wheel: Remove the wheel and tire from the rear axle.
  3. Access the seals: Locate the rear outer seals on the axle and remove any retaining clips that hold them in place.
  4. Remove the old seals: Use a seal puller or a flat-blade screwdriver to carefully remove the old seals. Be careful not to damage the axle or surrounding components during this process.
  5. Clean the axle: Clean the surface of the axle where the new seals will be installed to ensure a proper seal.
  6. Install the new seals: Carefully place the new seals onto the axle and secure them in place with the retaining clips.
  7. Replace the wheel: Replace the wheel and tire and lower the vehicle back to the ground.
It may be helpful to have a service manual for your vehicle on hand, as well as specialized tools such as a seal puller or a bearing packer. In addition, a clean and well-lit workspace will help make the process easier.

How do you remove the rear hub nut on a 2004 ford f450 need to get to axle seal

Remove the bolts or nuts at the end of the axle and remove the axle from the axle tube. There will be a little gear lube that will come out that you will need to replace before you use the vehicle again after you replace the wheel seal. That will expose the axle nuts to the axle hub that you will need to remove to replace the inner wheel seal. It's basically very simple once you get the axle out you will see how it all comes apart. Be sure to torque the axle nut and locking nut correctly upon reassembly.

Rear Axle Seal Replacement

remove rear tires, then remove brake calipers and rotors, then remove the 4 nuts (each side) that hold the axle shafts to the axle tube (located around the axle tube behind the backing plate) then using a slide hammer pull the axle shafts out, next using a die grinder and an air hammer get he retainer collar and the bearing off (without damaging the axle shaft) then remove the seal and the outer race which will still be in the housing. next put it all back together, make sure the plate with the studs is still on then slide the seal, bearing, then retainer on (all new parts) and using a press push them all the way back on. then is simple reassembly.

Need to remove and replace rear rotor

You have to remove the axle shafts first as it has a full-floating axle, then pull rotor and hub off the axle housing. Unbolt rotors from hub. Check bearings and seals in hubs and the axle snouts where the bearings run before installing. Put new flange gaskets on axle and torque flange bolts to 95 ft-lbs.
