1991 Toyota Camry won't always start. Get in as

1991 Toyota Camry won't always start. Get in as normal, insert key with shifter in park. Dashboard instument panel lights up, but nothing happens. Move shifter around, then starts, but not 100% of the time. I believe and have heard possible safety switch. Where is this switch located? Also no interior lights or back-up lights. Thanks & any info greatly appreciated.

Camry 97 shift stuck in park position

Hello. Welcome to FixYa. Please allow me to help out on this.

If your car is stuck in Park (the shifter won't move), you either have a blow nbrake light fuse, a bad brake light switch, or the shift interlock solenoid under the shifter is bad.

The fuse is the most common, followed by a failed or unplugged brake light switch. It is rare for the shift interlock solenoid to fail, however.

Can't get auto trans. out of park , has been fine till today

Do you have a brake switch problem where it will lock your car in park until it gets a signal that you have pressed the brake?

This is the way newer cars are, but I am not sure about the 1991 Toyota Camry.

One post says:
'check the switch you can adjust it either in the steering collum or in the floor shifter if it gets so far out of adjustment it wont allow the button to release it'

91 camry have to push shifter forward in park hard to start or car wont crank thanks greg

It sounds like the neutral safety switch is out of adjustment or it is defective.

1992 Toyota Camry won't crank

Check the ground cable going from the battery to
alternator, then to chassis. Make sure there is no
rust at the chassis ground wire terminal, and that it
is very tight. The fusible link will be off the alternator
red power cable, usually, but not 100% on that car.
Good luck.

1991 Toyota Camry..intermittent problem with car not starting when I turn the key, but sometimes when this happens if I move the gear shift out of park and then back into park, it will start normally but...

Some cars would not start if the transmission is in gear. Check first the wires and the switch for the lever on the transmission. The sensors/switch is found at the lever itself.

1991 toyota camry, starts fine but will not shift out of park, i can move the shifter into different positions but it doesnt change the gears, the transmision fluid stick/rod says the tranny fluid is hot,...

I would check to see if the shifting rod is connected to the tranny, you shouldn't be able to shift the car unless you had your foot on the break. IF the rod is connected then there is something inside the tranny that isn't right.
