Engine stopped while on interstate after hitting a pothole. I thought it popped out of gear, but nothing happened when I gave it gas. After coasting it to the side of the road I tried turning the key to start it. It would sound like it was going to start, but not turn completely over.

U never said what vehicle you have ..but there should be shift solenoids inside transmission pan a lot of times this go bad .also check you fluid lever if low it will cause this to happen as well

why not get the car checked out.??? buy a SHOP
you shut the engine off, and when you do, that it coasts to a stop
and did the noise come from the engine bay? and did the noise happen as engine was coasting to its natural stall or after that?
noises that happen, not moving are easy to find. so
get a competent mech, to find it. it be easy for them.
almost sounds as if there was water in that pothole correct? if so get some wd40 or crc and spray the distributer and or all sparkplug cables... this should sort the problem if not just leave it over night etc... to dry out
It could be a broken Oil Pump, Is there oil in the engine or when you hit the pothole you could have hit the Exhaust Pipe and broke the pipe causing a Exhaust Leak.
mcdevito75 here, Sounds as though you have a worn or broken timeing belt, or problem with -in the ignition system of the engine. Have the shop check it out for you.
