Get a flash light, and a normal size screwdriver. Look into the ignition
switch with the flashlight, you should see a piece of white plastic
blocking the entrance (supposedly a dust cover of sorts). This object is
spring loaded, and if it becomes cocked, it will lock in place.
Now comes the screw driver. Work on that plastic with the least amount
of effort (force) that you feel is required, until you get it back into
place.
I had this problem tonight. The key would not go more then 1/2" into the ignition. Looking inside, I saw a white plastic obstruction. I used a small screwdriver, placed it against the white plastic obstruction (1/3" into ignition?), pushed the handle toward dash with a bit of force, pushing the white plastic piece towards me. I heard a "snap", and the obstruction was cleared!!! Saved me a ton of money, I'm sure. Probably a good idea to spray some lubricant in there afterwards.
Tab wont budget after messing with it for an hour
Budge * tried contact cleaner, steering wheel is in locked position, wiggled both the steering wheel and angled the key, nothing, 2015 vw passat

Wiggle steering wheel as u try to put key in
What? Is this **** timed to go on at about the same time????? I parked my car after driving it 35 minutes home, turned it off, took the key out and noticed my radio stayed off but door was dinging when opened. Wipers wouldnt work, mileage and everything else came on....but remote would not lock or unlock doors or pop the trunk either....I was maaaad and baffles. Confused, I attempted to put my 2007 Jetta key back in and DENIED! I did all the steering wheel jiggling ****, lubricant, tried the other key, unplugged the battery and so on...... and Im a female, so I was motor head confused.
My tow truck guy brought his mechanic with him (out of sheer courteousness) and also some graphite and a screwdriver with him.....and as a final and last resort to the towing VW Dealer prices.....used the screwdriver to move that plastic piece and managed to get my key in and it started.....This is BEYOND inconvenient and SHOULD NOT BE HAPPEINING TO A 2007.........so I fear what else is to come.......My question is...I was told now I cant take my key out because they dont know what will happen?????? What do I do???? Can I???? PLLEASE HELP......
Sincerely...

We encountered the same issue with a 2006 Jetta. We left the car overnight and came back in the morning with silicone spray lubricant, screwdriver and a flashlight. We sprayed some lubricant inside the ignition and used the screwdriver to move the obstructing white piece aside. I was a bit forceful with the screwdriver which was necessary. After fiddling with it for some time we manage, to jam the key inside. Once the key was inside we moved it in and out to clear the way and make sure it smoothly goes in. The lubricant helped a lot.

This was an old post - but this advice saved me stuck in a parking lot. Thank you!
