My 2002 Santa Fe starts real hard lately. I was told the battery was failing, so I replaced it. It started real easy the first time, but after that I have to crank it for 10-15 seconds before it barely starts? Help!
After cranking for 10-15 seconds, it starts but runs really rough like its flooded until I give it a little gas. Once in a while I have to let the car sit for a minute and try it again. Could it be a clogged fuel filter, like its not getting enough gas? After cranking for 10-15 seconds, it starts but runs really rough like its flooded until I give it a little gas. I can also smell a little gas when the engine finally starts. I thought it might be a somewhat clogged gas filter. I was told the gas filter is mounted in the tank and would cost about $700 to replace! Oich!I can also smell a little gas when the engine finally starts. I was under the impression it was turning over sluggishly. Never mind on my previous post. Have you ever ran any fuel injection cleaner thru it(stuff you mix in the gas)?I was under the impression it was turning over sluggishly. Never mind on my previous post. Take the car to a large auto parts chain store such as autozone or advanced auto or pep boys, etc. They can test your alternator in the car and can also perform a starter test. I would start there if u can. They will do this for free! and report back with your findings.Take the car to a large auto parts chain store such as autozone or advanced auto or pep boys, etc. They can test your alternator in the car and can also perform a starter test. If the fuel filter was plugged you would have no power but the engine would start ok, chances are you have a defective fuel pump check valve, this causes the fuel to leak back into the tank and when u start it the engine is very lean until the air bleeds out of the lines, any wshop can verify this quickly by doing a pressure leak down test on the fuel pump.

If its the check valve it may have a piece of debris in it, you could try unhooking the fuel line and blowing compressed air back thru the line(turn your pressure regulator back to 50 psi or less) Give it a SHORT blast. "Usually" the check valve is just a ball and spring that sits in a seat. Another possibility is a stuck open EGR valve.

yeah, it should start without pushing the gas pedal. Sounds then, like too little gas, or too much air. I would start with a fuel pressure test to see if pressure is up to specs. Also check for any vacuum lines disconnected or bad. Might want to see if engine has any trouble codes. Some parts places (autozone) will check for codes for free. When was last time you changed your fuel filter? Might need replacing. Good luck.
Check for a good/clean connection on your battery terminals.Make sure it's on good & tight, then try to start the car - if that's not it. Get a jump, then go to Auto Zone, O'Reilley's, etc and get the battery & the starter checked. I'm betting it's either a poor connection, bad battery or your starter is going out (or possibly the starter relay switch) Start with your connections - that's the easy fix.
hi, again, when you go to the parts department, why not ask to see the microfish diagram,it will show you exactly where it fits....or even get a haynes manual, then you could really get your hands dirty.
best of luck

dear friend-you can elimenate all your problems when your goes for a service.let your serve station check the battery for pease of mind.the whinig noise comes from the V BELT and should be replaced with the cam belt.
