I'd get this looked at immediately, it's not the sort of thing that will go away. I'd start by checking fluid levels in the box.

There are many things that cause the flashing arrow, the mode switch, the remote transmission control (RTC) and the speedo sender on the differential.
By googling this I found a number of solutions to try-
This cleared the problem for a short term- with ignition off move the shift lever rapidly through its full range of motion.
Check all the connections on the three items listed above.
If your tranny isn't slipping, chances are it is something electrical. while each of these components aren't cheap, replacing one of them is way less than a rebuild on the tranny or a junnkyard replacement.

    Check all the connections

'97 volvo 960, Orange W-mode arrow blinking, then lost power. What is wrong?

The usual cause of this is a bad PNP switch or gear position sensor.
The "W" is flashing because the transmission control module is stuck in the Winter mode. If you are not familiar with sensor, I suggest you go and have the transmission codes read and reset to begin with and then post back the results.

The traction control lite and arrow on the dash and shifter keep blinking it doesnt make a difference what button you push

The first thing to do is have the computer scanned for codes, theres a problem maybe a speed sensor but scanning will help in finding the problem,

I have a 1994 Volvo 960 and the arrow is flashing on the dash plus the W,S,E buttons are blinking and the car won't start now. What is causing this and how can it be fixed?

The lights indicate a problem with the transmission. The fact that the engine wont start, leads me to believe that the PNP (neutral safety switch) is the problem. You will have to have the vehicle scanned to make sure.

I have a 1992 volvo 960 and the transmission needs to be fixed

The tranmission is shared with the Toyota Cressida 82-87 model (that's the A43DE in Toyota speak if yours is a AW30-43) Yours is either a AW30-43 or AW30-40. Go to Wikipedia to get the equvalent of yours. Try Aisin Warner on Wikipedia. No need to pay top dollar at Volvo wreckers when a Toyota one will fit (just swap the bell housing and switches/controls) Remember the labour to swap is only three hours just make sure you totally flush the old fluid out (7.5 litres) & new front & rear seals go on the replacement gearbox and that the extension housing bushing is OK. Good luck.

The W S E options for the 960transmission keep blinking and an up arrow in the instrument panel flashes with the WSE lights. What is the problem?

This is indicating a fault is stored in the transmission module, very likely that the gear position sensor (GPS) has failed, it's very common. Check the codes, if it's a 3-1-3 code, you need a new GPS

1998 Volvo V70 with potential transmission problems?

Yes, it's the 'pnp' switch (also known as the inhibitor switch) which is on the side of the transmission.

I own 2 Volvo 960s (3 litre automatics) which are similar in many respects ... and have that flashing arrow. It's a well known fault and you don't have much to worry about.

Rather than write it all here, you can read what I wrote as an ebay guide about it at http://reviews.ebay.co.uk/Volvo-960-Automatic_W0QQugidZ10000000003233806

I did put similar info on my website at http://www.glennsmart.btinternet.co.uk/volvo960.html with photos

Though the ebay guide is better ...

If you haven't got time to read it ... forget the flashing arrow and put a bit of black tape over it ... My wife's car has (192,000 miles) had that arrow flashing for 3 years. My car (100,000 miles) has had that flashing arrow since I bought it 1 year ago.

I did change the pnp on both cars ... but you also need to have the computer error reset by Volvo to have the light extinguished. Don't worry ... keep driving.

1995 volvo 960 stuck in winter mode

Where roy might have a possible source, it is most likely the park neutral switch which has started to fail. This is indicated by the shift arrow flashing on the dash. Replacement of this component is relatively difficult without a lift
