The gear boxes are just cheaply designed and made, its a very very common problem with these Dodge's. Even the new ones experience whats called the "death wobble", where the truck will all of a sudden veer left or right. The most common things ive replaced on these trucks to cure it is the track bar, and the gear box. $500 sounds about right for a new one, they arent very cheap.
It is very important to take this back and have it looked at by the shop that did the repair. The steering box would come pre-adjusted. I'm afraid they may have left something loose...it happens. Try phoning them, they may even want to tow it or send someone out to check it. Driving with the steering box coming unbolted from the frame would be tricky.
First, is the vehicle raised at all or still at factory height? If it is or not, then the entire front end must be inspected by someone who knows exactly what they're doing. But a lifted jeep can cause Death Wobble (google that if your truck's lifted). Sounds like a major safety issue. Possibly a worn bushing somewhere or junk steering box. Either way, after having replaced any worn parts in the front end, have it lined up. A slight misalignment shouldn't cause too much of a handling issue, but worn parts and a misaligment will ruin your tires.
Replace the steering box - check junkyard for one of similar model/year or ask Pep Boys to help by cross ref. your make/yr with others. Pep Boys will even install for you.
Check your collapsible steering column. They are a two piece design and one collapses inside the other on inpact so the driver will not be inpaled on the steering shaft.. When they are loose it creates play in the steering wheel. I think GM may have a service bulletin on it but I am not sure.
If no trouble found it may be the valve in the steering box.
Best way is to dry off everything in that area and place a piece of cardboard down under it. Either wait a day...or a few hours (depending on how bad it is leaking) or start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel from side to side. This should be able to pinpoint WHERE the leak is originating....then you can fix what is leaking. The steering gear box is actually easy to replace.
