You were told wrong. You can use any major brand you wish just be jure the wieght of the oil is what the manufacture recomends for your engine (10W30 or 5W30).

on top of the valve cover is a oil filler cap.pour oil there.

these is an old fix, and yes it is ok to do this, but it is better to add a can of Berrymans Chemtool run about 25 miles and drain oil.
