Many of those tumbler sets are fairly easy to replace. Check a haynes or chiltons manual to see which one you have. If yours has a small wiring harness coming out of it the security system needs to be re-armed after replacement (generally it involves turning the key on and letting the light flash for about 15 minutes till it glows steady, then you can start it) You can get a lock cylinder complete from any scrapyard.
If the one you have is inside the column you may want to have it done at a shop but it isn't impossible to do yourself but you will need instructions and be aware of airbag disable procedure.
She might need a new ignition switch. I would personally take the old key and have a new one cut. Although it is a copy of the old one, the points will be sharper helping to move the tumblers. Mike. Rate 100% please.
