SOURCE: Engine Squeals
Hey Striker,
Squealing is commonly caused by a loose slipping belt, something a serpentine tensioner usually prevents.
To rule the belt out, apply some belt grip (available at auto parts stores) to the belt and pulleys. Then run the vehicle checking for a difference.
I have a feeling there won't be much of one. That means a bearing is making the noise.
Open the hood, have a helper rev the engine. Listen and try to locate which component (alternator, water pump, etc.) is doing the squealing.
Once located, it will eventually need to be replaced. The noise is the first sign of failure. If its the water pump, look for signs of leakage. On any of them, check for play in the pulley.
Remember to check the idler and tensioner pulleys.

Belts stretch from new. Try to tighten them again. Hopefully the are not glazed or this may stay with you.
SOURCE: 2003 Lancer ES High pitch squeal and constant squeak
Shortly after replacing the serpentine belt in my lancer, the same thing happened. It is NOT the timing belt. Belts squeal when they slip. If your timing belt slipped it would cause your car to run funny.
have somebody check the belt for wear (or do it yourself), replace if necessary. If it doesn't need replacement, just tighten it.
If you have the 4cyl engine that I have, the tightening is kind of a pain in the ****. Not a great design by mitsubishi. There's a pulley near the front right corner of the engine in front of the alternator. the belt should be running around this pulley GROOVE SIDE OUT. This is the tension pulley.
To tighten:
1) Lightly loosen the bolt in the center of the pulley (slightly loosen, DO NOT REMOVE).
2) Under that pulley there's another bolt. You can see that the bolt goes through a piece of metal
attached to the back of the pulley. Figure out which way you need to turn the bolt to move the
pulley toward the front of the car. (i don't remember if it's right hand thread, or left hand) This
puts extra tension on the belt. You probably don't need much. Over tensioning the belt can
cause pulley bearing failure. If you haven't done this work before, ask someone for
help. It's better to tighten a little bit, a few times rather than overtighten once.
3) Don't forget to ReTighten the bolt in the center of the pulley.
If there's lots of cracks and pieces missing on the ribs or grooves of the belt you should replace it first.
Happy repairing,
Cliff

the shift to d2 light comes on when batt. voltage gets low enough that all of the sytems can not function properly. the noise is your bel slipping, your battery looses charge and shift to d2 light comes on to tell you to leave trans in drive 2 so it dose not have to use batt voltage to shift. replace your belt and tensioner if your alternator is ok.

take off your serp-belt and spin your water pump, alternator, idler pully and see what squeaks or feels rough. your water pump bearings may be bad. the only thing you can do is change it. dont forget to change your thermostat and antifreeze. FYI your antifreeze is made with lubricants in it for your water pump bearings.
