1998 gmc k2500 5.7l hood release cable stretched. Cannot open hood

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

That has to be a nasty problem. I won't check the "solution" button so that somebody else might help. But my thought is, can you access the other end of the cable, inside the passenger compartment? If you could take off the handle and pull the cable with pliers, that might open the hood. In fact, there might be an adjustment there to tighten the cable. Or perhaps you could fashion a pretty stout small hook and reach the cable from underneath the front of the truck. Hope you can fix it.

You can temporarily fix this if this solution will work:
disassemble the hood release in the cabin and pull the cable until the hood latch opens. Then you can remove or adjust the cable as necessary.

Can't open the hood by pulling hood release

Cable is stretched/sprung. Access hood release panel and pull cable with channel locks.. or worse, something is stuck in the latch mechanism under hood.
See repair rep at Ford in any case.

2000 Jimmy- 3 problems- 1. Heater just blows cold air 2. Can't get the hood latch to release even when pulled all the way with vigor 3. Rear window wiper stuck in upright position and won't respond to...

The no heat problem could be a stuck open thermostat, plugged heater core, the air mix/mode actuator, or the control module. You might be able to have someone push down on the hood while pulling the hood release to get the hood open, the latches often stick, or the release cable maybe stretched and not operating the latch enough to release it. The rear wiper motor is probably bad.

Hood release lever not releasing hood tried bouncing the hood while pulling lever i am pulling the correct lever

I had same problem. Sprayed latch with WD-40 and no more problems. P.S. The lever should say "Hood" or there should be a picture of an open hood.

If lubrication doesn't work, your cable might be stretched or your latching mechanism might be defective. In either case, a visit to your local salvage yard will solve the problem.

Interior hood release broke out around mounting bolt. Temporary mounted release but still can not release hood. No opening problems until now. How do I get the open?

If just the mounting broke & not the cable also, take a pair of vicegrips or good pliers on visible portion of steel cable & pull inward. If the cable itself is not broken it will pull out enough to open release.

1998 GMC Jimmy hood release cable broken

Remove the cable from the latch and any hold downs or clamps. Push the rubber gromet through the fire wall into the car. Remove the handel assy. and pull
the cable assy.out through the fire wall. Now, if the
gromet can be removed. You can decide if you wan't
to put it back from under the dash, or under the hood.
Whatever is easiest for you, but if it can't, it has to go
back from under the dash. Hope this helps.
Good luck.

The hood release cable is stretched out on my jeep cherokee sport, I can not open the hood. Is there another way to open it ?

If it's actually just stretched out you should be able to grab the cable behind the pull release, and using pliers, pull it far enough to release the latch.

The hood release lever does not release the hood.

Do you have a new cable?? If not most likely there is a need for it it may be stretched out. You can grab the end of the cable that goes to the release (in the interior) with a pliers and pull it this will finish the cable and a new one will most likely be needed

Hood release on 95 S-10 inoperable

Have one person pull the hood release inside cab while the other person pushes down on front center of hood.  One might have to push down a few times before it releases.  This only works for stretched cable not broken cable.
