2003 Dodge Durango 4.7. Cranked it yesterday morning and there was a bad knock. Turned off the car, checked oil, etc. Oil was a little low but not bad. Added some, recranked knock was gone. Cranked this morning, knock is back. Turn off car, recranked, no knock. No codes, no loss of power.

Some vehicles at some point have a knock at start up until the oil pump is primed and pumping oil. Best option is to put something like a mystery oil in that sticks to all moving parts to protect all moving parts. Good luck

This sounds like an oil pressure problem, The very first thing I would do is if it's almost due for an oil change do it now, if not replace the oil filter it actually has a diaphragm in it to keep the oil from leaking back into the engine when the engine is off causing the oil pump to have to fill the filter before lubricating the engine causing the lifters to rap and the connecting rods to knock, remember to add oil if you just change the filter. If the engine has a lot of miles you might want to consider an oil treatment like SLICK 50 it coats the friction surfaces and prevents wear. I hope this helps. Take care.

SOURCE: oil light goes on and off and engine has a knocking sound.

This sounds like severe engine damage, do to loss of internal lubrication (no oil). That's the bad thing about 'idiot' warning lights, they come on when u have a severe problem, and the damage is done. You are going to probably have to purchase a used engine from an auto salvage yard, or purchase a re -manufactured engine. Sorry for the bad news, this is about as bad as it gets.

SOURCE: Engine oil light 2004 durango

sounds like you have a bad connection to the oil pressure sending unit or the sending unit itself is bad. look for a loose connection and if it's ok just replace the sending unit.

SOURCE: my 1999 4 door dodge stratus will not start or

This sounds like a bad starter, the starter is what cranks the motor and if the battery is good then i would say the starter went bad, if you tap on it it may start but the starter would need replacing, a quick test with a test light would be to have someone hold the key in the crank postion while you check the wires on the back of the starter for power, the big cable wire should have power at all times the small wire should have power when the key is in the crank spot, if theres power on the small wire then starter is bad, hope this helps, disregaurd the switch,sorry3371223.jpg14d5af0.jpg

SOURCE: engine started making ticking noise, checked oil

the ticking noise could be the rockers and the clearance may need to be checked and possibly adjusted.you should get the oil pressure checked with a gage to make sure its not an oil pressure problem.and start getting your oil changed on a regular basis as this is the most common problem for engine problems and failure and its the cheapest most cost effective maintenance.

SOURCE: 2003 Hyndai Elantra oil light has started flickering, Why?

If it flickers at idle, it "might" be engine wear, especially if you are approaching 200,000 miles. It might also be a faulty oil pressure gauge sending unit which is a little more likely.

I have a 2005 Dodge Durango and the oil light comes on but only when I come to a stop but goes off ones I start moving again.

Check your oil level and change your oil pressure sensor. If good, your pressure is dropping at low rpm. Can be a bad gasket or oil pump. Check the oil for antifreeze and antifreeze for oil. If either looks like chocolate milk bad head gasket. If not your pump is bad

A knocking that starts when engine is cranked then it goes away

The knock is likely a worn connecting rod bearing. Are you using the correct weight of oil, never use any heavier than 10W30W, heavy oil viscosity's cause slow circulation through the oil passages and starve the engine's bearings for oil.

Oil light comes on when stopping & goes off when accelerating.

Low on oil or bad conection at sending unit. Maybe even a bad sending unit. Make sure the engine is off when checking oil.Not trying to be rude.

I have a 2006 dodge durango 5.7 hemi, i had my oil changed and headed out of town the next day, truck started raddling and knocking, the oil light came on and we pulled over, thinking we didnt have oil to...

Too much oil can do more damage than too little in some senarios, the oil actually increases the drag on internal engine parts, especially the crankshaft, when over filled and at higher RPM's. Drain it out till level is at the low side of dipstick marks and run vehicle. Definely bring this to the attention of persons who serviced your vehicle. Hopefully you caught it in time. My family members have lost 3 motors to this kind of incompetent service over the years!

My engine started knocking after low oil pressure

These truck's are bad about oil pump's, I would replace the oil pump, and hope for the best, if the knocking goes away, then it's fix, but if you still have the knocking, the only fix is an engine overhaul, or a good used engine.

You could have either a bad gauge or bad oil pressure sending unit. I would start with the sending unit, it is cheaper and easier to replace.

Oil light is on

May be bad oil pressure sending unit. Best way to check is to connect a mechanical oil pressure guage to engine and check pressures when engine is warm. Should be no lower than 40 psi at idle when warm, no higher than 70 psi at 2000 rpm.
