You can't program a Volvo S40 keyless entry remote. The module requires a dealer tool for synchronization. If your remote isn't working, try replacing the battery. If that doesn't help, contact a Volvo dealer to set up an appointment to have the remote programmed. The instructions previously published on this page were inaccurate, according to several readers. Please contact The Remote Guy if you know how to program the S40 remote.

programing a Nissan remote , is hidden secret by Nissan Dealers. As a Nissan Technician i will share it.
Just get in your vech , close all doors. Using your power lock switch ,
lock all doors. After doors are locked take your Ignition Key and
insert it and remove it from ignition switch in a slow fashion , but
consitant pace. (97 and earlyer are fast) When you see the hazzard
lights flash, put key in ignition switch and turn to the On postion ..
Do NOT CRANK or you will have to Start over .. After in the On postion
.. Hit the Lock button on remote... Hazzard lights should flash..(
note..you have to reprogram all remotes when adding a new one , if you
don't your old remotes will not work ) If your doing just the one ,
turn igntion switch off and unlock door and get out and try it. If you
are doing more than one. While still in Vech with Key on . After you
hit the Lock button on Remote and hazzard light flashed .. with key
still on .. use master lock switch unlock doors and relock and then hit
Second Remote, Lights should flash again , repeat if adding a 3rd
remote.. after done just turn key off and unlock door and get out and
try.

If there is a blinking car icon with an "X" over it. This icon means the Immobilizer has been activated and hence won't allow the car to start. It could be due to a bad SCU, Start Control Unit. The SCU is actually the ignition switch on these cars.
Most of the time it's triggered by the anti-theft system..You can try this trick i learned that the dealers won't tell you...try locking and unlocking of the doors five times with the remote to reset the immobilizer and see if this helps.
Since you were in an accident it could be a safety related issue...such as a steering box fault. Your owners manual has some information in it on the immoblizer.
Good luck..i hope this helps...please take time to rate me a fixya,
SOURCE: 2001 Volvo S40 missing key/remote
You car has an integrated key and remote.
There is a software that needs to be downloaded to the car. When the
remote is purchased at the dealer it comes in a plastic package. That
plastic package has a sticker on it. The sticker contains id codes.
There are two codes one is 16 digits/letters and the second one is 8 digits/letters.
Without this sticker the dealership can not program the remote/key to
the car. If you buy a key elsewhere, make sure it has the codes included.
Unfortunately you cannot program a remote yourself.

There is one under the hood right behind the washer fluid fill, and there is one in the passenger foot well area, its tucked up a little behind the dash on the firewall. You have to remove a small panel then there are two big plastic screws that turn and let it come down.
