I have a 1992 VW GTI 16v. I have owned it for 10 years. I recently went to get a SMOG check and the Tech said I was missing the check engine light;consequently, it failed. I don't believe that this model/year has an indicator light. I have never had this issue with previous SMOG checks. Where can I find some info on this? Any help is appreciated.
The light has likely burned out. I doubt if someone removed the bulb. Have that checked before hitting the panic button! Any car with computer controls has a light.
Only other possibility is that you have whats called a "grey market" car...One imported from europe without the normal equipment on regular imports. I'm not a VW guy, in fact I like them so much I banned them from my shop...but I know that check engine light is standard on anything with a computer system, even the fairly basic ones. Sorry I can't be of more help.
California? I heard that the smog there is really pot smoke and all the politicians are breathing it....I've got a weed eater that says I'll get cancer if I touch it (or eat it...can't remember which) if I'm in that state!!!!
Figures!!

Thanks for the comment. I really don't think that there is a burned out light. I have looked for a place for the light and there isn't one. I have taken the dash apart looking for any possible wires... still nothing. No symbol for check engine or anything like that is on the dash cluster either. I have never seen this light come on before.
Thanks for the advice. I did finally find out from Volkswagen that only cars produced to California EPA emission standards had indicator lights. All of those that were produced to " U.S. standards" from VW did not have a light. Unfortunately, the manuals do not clearly state this. Luckily problem solved.
Thanks again for the post.
