03 Nissan Xterra Oil pressure light came on this morning but then looked faded by end of day. Oil level is fine and there's no engine knocking. No pressure gauges to check. Just a light problem?

SOURCE: nissan xterra knock sensor

It's the valley of the engine underneath the intake manifold. It's about an $800 job because the top of the engine has to come off. However, unless you have a supercharged xterra it shouldn't effect performance. Also, the knock sensor will not trip the check engine light, as it does not indicate a primary problem, so if your light is on you should have another code that should be fixed first.

SOURCE: check gauges and no oil pressure in 03 ram hemi 4x4

Had the truck the truck to the shop and they said it was the sensor. I had it replaced and it hasn't screwed up since. If you search out this problem on the net, this is a problem with engine and its oil pressure sensor. Apparently, Chrysler is aware of the problem.

SOURCE: 'Check gauges" light comes on and oil pressure gauge reads zero.

The first thing I would definitely do there is change the oil. Used oil tends to loose lubricity and becomes thinner than it was when in the container. When hot, it becomes even thinner and will cause a drop in pressure.
Most jeep engines hold around six quarts of oil, so by adding what you did the new oil helped a bit but cannot correct the problem.
I would change the oil and use either a 20w50 oil with a pint of Marvel oil, or change to a good synthetic with a container of Lucas additive. It is possible that whatever oil you have been using is causing a carbon buildup that is beginning to block off the pump pickup screen. Either of the above suggestions will help with that. In engine oils, price is important...cheaper oils are high paraffin base which causes deposits to form.
You don't want that in your engine. Only exception is Wal-mart store brand oil which I believe is Quaker State (re-packaged). If you opt for a synthetic, it's not a bad choice and is cheaper.
Make sure you use a good quality filter. The filter is what keeps the oil clean and useful during its lifespan.
One note... If there is any tapping or knocking inside the engine, that is caused by internal bearing wear and should be corrected immediately. No oil can compensate for internal pressure loss and if caught early, can be repaired. (otherwise, later, engine will need to come out and be overhauled or replaced.)
Any pressure problems can be verified by installing an external mechanical gauge on the engine. That is the only way to know exactly what is going on with any degree of accuracy. (dash gauge is electro-mechanical).
good luck

My 2000 Nissan xterra started shaking while idling and the service engine light came on. I changed the oil and it feels better. It doesnt knock In neutral or park. It also rattles till you hit about 30...

Also- the rattle is most likely the valve lifters. The lifters on this engine and the model previous (I have owned both to 180k miles or more) lose pressure when the motor is off. They re-pressureize with engine oil after the motor starts and tap a little until they "pump up" to full size. Just don't drive until the rattle dies down and as long as it is under 30 seconds or so- you will be fine there.

Oil light comes on and off when in park idling. oil level is fine.

Sounds like a weak oil pump at higher rpm the pump creates more pressure which is adaquate to make the light go out and supply oil to the engine. At lower rpm your oil pump is not creating the pressure needed. Be carefull not to let it idle or sit in park to long this could damage the engine. There is oil pressure sending unit also this is what makes the light come on and it also shows the oil pressure on the oil gage on dash if your vehicle is equipped with gage. The sending unit could be faulty, but play it safe and have your mechanic diagnose the problem.

2006 Xterra. Low oil pressure gauge at idle to

inner timing cover oil gallery gaskets are more than likely your problem...you can make your own for 10 dollars or give nissan 500 for a new cover as they dont supply the gaskets....check the oil pan for gasket material...thats a sure sign they blew out but they may be gone and still holding together so its not always accurate...

My engine oil light will not go off. I checked the oil level, and for a leak and both are fine. how do I fix this?

OK this can be two things,, first it can mean the oil pressure is very low and second it can be a faulty sending unit,, replace the sending unit and if that doesn't solve the problem you will need the engine looked at

The oil light came on today when i started my 2003 xterra

The oil light comes on when there is no pressure. There is no pressure when the pump either cannot get oil to pump or has oil and will not pump it.

Get it checked before you do anything else. A engine running with no pressure is a cooked engine.

The oil pressure light on my 2004 nissan xterra stays

if the switch has been repaced then u most likely really have an oil pressure problem, you will neded to hook up a test mechanical oil pressure guage and verify the actual pressure, I suspect you will end up replacing the oil pump, the inlet screen may be clogged with dirt or the pump is worn out or has a stuck pressure regualtor valve.
