Sounds like a bit of a timing issue on the motor or one of the plug wires are bad

SOURCE: still overheating after head is skimmed

waterpump? No movement of water/coolant, engine overheats. Engine overheats, warp heads. Next time you rip a head off, check gasket to see if head gasket failed or if there is a different cause to car overheating.

SOURCE: My Toyota Hiace high roof with 3L Diesel Engine heats up.

Your thermostat may be staying closed, if the top coolant hose becomes hot after the engine running for a while, then thermostat is opening ok. Next check to see if the bottom hose going to the rad is getting warm. If its staying cold then you may have a problem with the water pump not circulating the water around the cooling system. If thats ok check the rad cap is sealing ok. when the engine gets up to normal engine temperture remove the reservoir top filling cap which has a rubber pipe going to the thermostat housing. with the engine running there should be no water coming down the pipe and exiting the filler cap. If there is it could be the rad cap not holding pressure which it would need to be replaced or the head gasket is leaking and pressurising the coolant system.. hope this helps you..

SOURCE: tappet problem

the check prosidure requires you engine be cold engine at top dead center at #1 cylinder and cams timing markes aligned to markes. check only intake and exaust lifters with lobes in the released position. intake is .15-.25mm and exaust is .25-.35 mm. rotate the engine 180deg. to check the remaining cylinders. if exsesive play is exsperianced. You must remove cam shafts, and add a new shim to remove the clearence. this includes the timing chain.most engine machine shops have these shims.really suggest you go online for a sevice manule. you can ruin this engine if not performed properly. This is a zero clearence engine! (no clearence between valves and pistons.) any more questions i can help you with just send to my e mail.

I might not be right but it sounds like the fuel pump went out
now that I have thought about it more I would take the plugs out and check the compression. if the compression is low then the head bolts come loose because he did not torque them the right lbs. you might have to take it apart and put in a new head gasket if that has happened. sometimes the head gasket blows in between the cylinders.
