The front disc brakes have 3 bolts that prevent me from putting on new rims. Are there certain manufacturers that can handle this problem. I understand the newer Hyundai's dont have the three bolt. What are my choices? What rims can I use on this vehicle?

Brake discs with pads need to be changed both sides on the same axle. Slacken the lug nuts and then lift the corner of the car and remove the wheel. Put a screwdriver tip between the brake pad and the disc and twist until a couple of millimeters of gap has opened up, do this front and back of the disc. Now remove the two large caliper securing bolts and lift the caliper up. locate the caliper body so that its weight does not pull on the rubber brake hose ( piece of wire to hold it temporarily to the strut spring is good). The disc is located by a couple of small screws. Remove these and the disc will come off the wheel studs. Fit the new disc and reinstate by reversing the steps above. Note if you have pushed the pads back far enough when removing the calipers then the caliper should refit easily over the unworn and therefore fatter new disc even with new pads fitted. put a small dab of anti-seaze grease (CopperEaze or similar) on the back of each pad as this will prevent squeal. Tighten the caliper bolts thoroughly when reassembling. Remember to pump the brake peddle back to pressure to re-seat the new pads to discs before test driving. Now do the same to the other side. If you are new to this the fist wheel is a voyage of discovery and the second wheel will take a quarter of the time.

JACK THE WHEEL UP, AND TAKE TIRE AND RIM OFF! YOU'LL SEE THE DISK BRAKE CALIPER! ON THE BACK OF THE CALIPER IS TWO BOLTS (POSSIBLY ALLEN HEAD BOLTS) REMOVE THOSE TWO BOLTS, AND WIGGLE THE CALIPER! YOU'LL NEED TO SPREAD THE CYLINDER INSIDE WIDER TO ACCOMODATE FOR THE NEW BRAKE THICKNESS! YOU CAN DO THIS BY LOOSENING THE ZERK FITTING JUST ENOUGH TO PUSH THE CYLINDER IN WITHOUT LOSING ALL THE BRAKE FLUID! SET THE BRAKEPADS IN THE SAME POSITION AS THE OLD ONES COME OUT! PUT THE CALIPER BACK ON THE HUB, AND PUT THE BOLTS BACK IN! TIGHTEN THEM BACK DOWN, AND PUT THE WHEEL BACK ON!

Section 06-03: Brakes, Front Disc 1999 Taurus, Sable Workshop Manual REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Brake Shoe and Lining Removal

1. Remove brake master cylinder filler cap (2162). Check fluid level in brake master cylinder reservoir (2K478) . Remove brake fluid until brake master cylinder reservoir is half full. Discard removed fluid.
   

1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
   

1. Remove wheel and tire assembly from front disc brake rotor mounting face. Use care to avoid damage or interference with disc brake caliper (2B120) , front disc brake rotor shield (2K004) or front wheel knuckle (3K185) .
   

1. Remove rear brake pin retainers (2N386).
   

1. NOTE: It is not necessary to disconnect hydraulic connections.
   
   Lift disc brake caliper from front disc brake caliper anchor plate (2B292) and front disc brake rotor (1125) . Do not pry directly against metal caliper piston or damage will occur.
   

1. NOTE: To prevent damage, do not allow disc brake caliper to hang by the front brake hose (2078) .
   
   Position disc brake caliper out of the way.
   

1. Remove inner outer brake shoe and lining (2001) assembly from front disc brake caliper anchor plate .
   

1. Inspect both rotor braking surfaces. Minor scoring or buildup of lining material does not require machining or replacement of front disc brake rotor.

1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 .

1. Remove the front wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04 .

1. Insert a steel rod in the brake disc to prevent the halfshaft from turning while removing the front axle wheel end nut.

1. CAUTION: The front axle wheel end nut is a torque prevailing design nut. Do not reuse it.
   Remove the nut and washer.
   • Remove the steel rod in the brake disc.

1. WARNING: Remove or tape the brake pads to prevent them from falling out of the anchor plate.
   CAUTION: To prevent damage to the brake hose, do not allow the disc brake caliper to hang suspended from the hose.
   Remove the bolts and position the disc brake caliper aside.

1. Remove the front brake anti-lock sensor harness from the clip.

1. Remove and discard the nut and bolt.
   • If necessary, use a punch and a hammer to drive the bolt out of the knuckle.

1. CAUTION: Position the end of the pry bar outside the bushing pocket to avoid damage to the bushing.
   CAUTION: Do not damage the front wheel driveshaft joint boot (3A331).
   Separate the front suspension lower arm from the knuckle.

1. CAUTION: Never use a hammer to separate the front wheel driveshaft joint (3B413) from the wheel hub. Damage to the joint threads and internal components can result.
   Using the special tool, press on the front wheel driveshaft joint until it is loose in the wheel hub.

1. Rotate the front wheel knuckle rearward, while pulling it outward at the bottom and remove the front wheel driveshaft joint from the wheel hub.

1. Using a pry bar, separate the inboard CV joint housing assembly (3B436) (3B437) from the transaxle.

1. CAUTION: Do not damage the differential seal.
   Remove the halfshaft assembly with both hands.

Installation

1. Lubricate the differential seal.
   • Use MERCON® V Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-5-QM or equivalent meeting MERCON® V specifications.

1. CAUTION: Install a new circlip every time you remove the halfshaft from the vehicle.
   On the RH side halfshaft only, install a new circlip in the groove in the inboard CV joint stub shaft.
   • Start one end in the groove and work the circlip over the shaft and into the groove. This will prevent the circlip from over-expanding.

1. CAUTION: Do not damage the inboard CV joint housing assembly and the differential seal.
   NOTE: If necessary, use a non-metallic mallet to aid in seating the circlip in the differential side gear groove (RH) or inboard CV joint housing (LH). Tap only on the outboard front wheel driveshaft joint.
   Align the inboard CV joint housing splines with the differential side gear splines (RH) or output shaft splines (LH), and push the inboard CV joint housing assembly inward until the circlip seats in the differential side gear (RH) or inboard CV joint housing (LH).

1. Align the front wheel driveshaft joint splines and the wheel hub splines, and push the joint into the wheel hub as far as possible.

1. Install the washer and the old nut. Using the old nut, seat the front wheel driveshaft joint in the hub. Remove the old nut and discard it.

1. Connect the suspension lower arm to the knuckle.

1. CAUTION: Install a new bolt and nut.
   Install the new bolt and nut.

1. Insert a steel rod in the brake disc to prevent the halfshaft from turning while installing the new front axle wheel end nut.

1. Apply a small patch of Loctite 242 or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G351-A5 to the last five front wheel driveshaft joint threads.

1. CAUTION: Install and tighten the new front axle wheel end nut to specification in a continuous rotation. Stopping the rotation during installation will cause the nylon lock to set incorrectly. This will cause incorrect torque readings while tightening the nut, and lead to bearing failure. Always install a new front axle wheel end nut after loosening the nut, or when the nut has not been installed to specification in a continuous rotation.
   Install and tighten the new nut to specification in a continuous rotation.
   • Remove the steel rod from the brake disc.

1. Position the disc brake caliper and install the bolts.

1. Install the front brake anti-lock sensor harness in the clip.

1. Install the wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04 .

1. Lower the vehicle.

1. Check and, if necessary, fill the transaxle to the correct level with the specified fluid. For additional information, refer to Section 307-01 .

1. Hand Brake ON , loosen wheel bolts to hand tight, jack up front wheel , chock back wheels , put axle stands/blocks in place (just in case) .

2. Remove wheel. Disconnect pad wear wire , it pulls out of the connector.

3. Remove lower caliper bolt (at the back of caliper at the bottom) , need a 13mm ring spanner for head of bolt and 17mm to stop it spinning

4. Use a screw driver between the back of the outer pad and the caliper to prise the caliper back away from the back of outer pad. Pivot caliper upwards to rest on top of wheel disc (good idea to tie it up with some wire) .

5. Remove and discard old pads , clean out with wire brush and soft brush , don't breath in to much of the dust its nasty.

6. Fit new pads (remember pad wear sensor on inside pad), make sure that the pads are in contact with the disc , and the top of them sitting flush with the rim of the disc, don't force them into this position they should naturally sit there.

7. Lower caliper down into position, you may need to push back the piston further in order to make room for the new pads , do this with you hands or a small piece of timber. Keep an eye on the brake fluid resivoir , your pushing fluid back in so if its over full it may spill over. Refit lower caliper bolt (Renault say to replace this each time), and tigthen. Reconect pad wear sensor.

8. Pump brake pedal until normal brake pressure returns.

9. Remove axle stand/blocks , refit wheel and bolts , lower jack and tighten up wheel bolts.

1999 Taurus/Sable Section 06-03: Brakes, Front Disc 1999 Taurus/Sable Workshop Manual REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Procedure revision date: 06/25/1998 Disc Removal

1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
   

1. Remove wheel and tire assembly. Be careful to avoid damage or interference with caliper bleeder screw fitting and front disc brake rotor shield (2K004).
   

1. CAUTION: Handle front disc brake rotor (1125) and disc brake caliper (2B120) assembly in such a way as to prevent deformation of front disc brake rotor , and nicking, scratching or contamination of brake linings/rotor surfaces.
   NOTE: To prevent damage, do not allow disc brake caliper to hang by the front brake hose (2078) .
   
   
   Remove caliper anchor plate bolts and discard. Position disc brake caliper out of the way. Prevent separation of caliper housing from anchor bracket because contamination of guide pin journals can occur.
   

1. NOTE: If excessive force must be used during front disc brake rotor removal, the front disc brake rotor should be checked for runout prior to installation.
   
   
   If additional force is required to remove front disc brake rotor , apply Rust Penetrant and Inhibitor F2AZ-19A501-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C56-A on front and rear rotor/hub mating surfaces. First, strike front disc brake rotor between lug bolts (1107) with a plastic hammer. If this does not work, attach 2-3 Jaw Puller 205-D027 (D80L-1013-A) or equivalent and remove front disc brake rotor . Remove front disc brake rotor from wheel hub (1104) assembly by pulling it off the lug bolts.
   

Installation

1. If original front disc brake rotor is being installed, make sure rotor braking and mounting surfaces are clean.
   

1. CAUTION: Failure to clean rust and foreign material from rotor and hub mounting faces when installing new or old front disc brake rotors will result in high rotor runout, which will speed up the development of brake roughness shudder vibration.
   Apply a small amount of Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound D7AZ-19A331-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M1C171-A to pilot diameter of front disc brake rotor.
   

1. Install front disc brake rotor on wheel hub assembly.
   

1. Install disc brake caliper and new caliper anchor bracket bolts on front disc brake rotor . Tighten caliper anchor bracket bolts to 88-118 Nm (65-87 lb-ft).
   

1. CAUTION: Failure to tighten lug nuts (1012) in a star pattern may result in high rotor runout, which will speed up the development of brake roughness, shudder and vibration.
   Install wheel and tire assembly on vehicle. Tighten lug nuts to 115-142 Nm (85-104 lb-ft) using Rotunda Accutorq® Lug Nut Socket 164-R0303 or equivalent on a 1/2 inch air impact wrench, or use a torque wrench.
   

1. Lower vehicle.
   

1. Pump brake pedal prior to moving vehicle to position brake linings.
   

1. Road test vehicle.
   

you will need a big c-clamp to compress the piston back inside the caliper too when you remove your old pads. Otherwise you will never get the new ones to fit over the disc.

The hard part is pressing the caliper piston abck into the caliper so you can get the new, thicker pads over the rotor. A large C Clamp works best.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Pads —Front Disc Brake Removal

1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04 .

1. Remove the front disc brake caliper bolts. torx bit. T20?

1. Support the front disc brake caliper from the front strut and spring assembly using mechanics wire.

1. Remove the front disc brake pads.
   1. Remove the outboard front disc brake pad.
   1. Remove the inboard front disc brake pad.

Installation

1. CAUTION: Make sure the master cylinder reservoir does not overfill and spill brake fluid while retracting the front disc brake caliper piston.
   NOTE: It is necessary to fully retract the front disc brake caliper piston in the bore before installing the front disc brake pads.
   Install the front disc brake pads.
   1. Install the inboard front disc brake pad.
   1. Install the outboard front disc brake pad.

Caution. The outer pads are left and right. put left on driver side.

1. Position the front disc brake caliper on the front-wheel knuckle and install the brake caliper pin bolts.

1. WARNING: It is necessary to depress the brake pedal several times to position the front disc brake caliper piston before driving the vehicle.
