Weak blower motor

Fan barely blows. Heat still works okay. A friend told me usually blower motors quit working on one or more speeds. Mine still works - barely on all settings, although "high" is pretty noisy. So, is replacing the blower motor the answer, or is there more to it? Is it accessible from inside - on the passenger side?

My info says to remove blower motor from under the dash.

Since it blows slow on the first 3 or 4 speeds, it is the blower resistor. And when you set it to high at it gets faster, but make noise, it is the blower also. Just a note. Blower noise can be from the blower bearings are worn out. Or that something has made it's way into the blower fan. You won't really know until the blower is pulled out. I have seen the fan filled with leaves and twigs before.

Check good voltage and ground for blower motor. Actuators under the dash may be restricting air flow? High speed doesn't usually use a resister.
Check for hvac trouble codes, in my part of the country, some of the national brand autostores will check codes for free, if there are any.
If you think problem with blower motor, itself, replace it. Sometimes, you can remove blower motor, use jumper wires for voltage and ground, using inline fuse, come off the battery, see if it blows like you think it should?

Thanks Jack. I was thinking I'd for sure be swapping out a bad motor. Now I don't know.

I don't know how to check for ground or voltage. Also, what do you mean by "actuators"?

About trouble codes: Would the "service engine" light be on for that? (It's not).

Finally, the fan does blow (barely)on all speeds. It's just that it's noticeably louder on "high (4)".

Actuators are directional doors or temp door, under the dash that may restrict air flow? If you have good voltage and ground at the blower motor, either the air-flow is restricted or the blower motor is faulty.
Around here, some of the national brand auto stores will check codes for free, if there are any? Tell them the lamp on the dash has been coming on and off, sometimes they won't check it if the lamp isn't on. In the past, I've had inactive codes point me in the right direction.

'94 Silverado heat/ac fan not blowing. Hear clicking when selecting l,m, and high but not blowing

94 CHEVY Silverado ????,heat/ac fan not blowing. K1500?????? Hear clicking when selecting l'm, SET high but not blowing! WITH AIR OR NO A/C? FIRST IS FUSES, MAKE SURE THE BLOWER FUSE IS NOT BLOWN.
EASY NO? CHECK ALL FUSES FIRST. ON ALL ELECTRICS FAILING OF ANY KIND.
BAD FUSE, BAD WIRINIG , BAD CONNECTIONS. OR EVEN BAD RELAYS TO THE BLOWER OR BAD SWITCH BLOW.
THE OLD CARS , HAD A SPEED BLOW , RESISTOR BLOCK
THAT FAILS ON ALL SPEEDS BUT HIGH, SO ITS NOT THAT.
OWN A VOLT METER????
HERE IT IS, ANY OF THIS CAN FAIL THIS OLD
WE USES A VOLTMETER TO FIND THE POINT OF FAILURE.
A SHORTED BLOWER MOTOR CAN BLOW LEFT SIDE TOP
FUSABLE LINK.RIGHT FUSE BLOWN MAKES THE CONTROLLER DEAD.

I have only high speed on my ac/heat switch. have replace acdelco blower motor resistor 2 times already. works for a while and quits. whatelse do I need to check etc?.

If you have replaced the blower motor resistor block twice all ready, i would be replacing the blower motor itself. When the blower motor is drawing too much current it burns out resistors for lower fan speeds in resistor block, but doesnt blow fuse for fan. Also check for leaves and stuff in fan when removing fan.

The fan for heat/ac has gone out. Does dash get removed in repair work? For the last year the force control has not functioned as it should. Hi would be barely blowing sometimes. What would be the relative...

This may be just a blower motor (a/c fan) resistor issue. This resistor, depending on your vehicle is usually located near the blower motor. Remove the blower motor to locate it. This resistor controls fan speed, when they fail some or all fan speed may not work.

My a/c went out on my 99 mercury cougar but that was because my a/c compressor went out. My heat was working after that and then it went out too. I thought it was my blower motor so i bought a new one....

You have two other components that control the blower, the control switch and the blower resistor block. The switch is the knob you turn to select the speed and will cause you loose power to the next component that is the resistor block. This part is usually next to the blower motor because it needs to be cooled by the fan and it is responsible for the different fan speeds. Either component can cause a total loss of the blower fan. Go to a online parts lookup like autozone.com and it will show you a picture of the parts so you can identify them.

Blower motor stopped working All summer i only had high speed on the fan motor and know it quite..People keep telling me it is a modual..

I think I'd try a new blower motor resistor first, as your going to need a new one anyway if it only ran in high speed. Look behind glove box, and under dash on passenger side and see where wires from blower motor are going back to. The connector where the blower motor wires attach to, is usually your blower resistor, held in with a couple of screws. If wires go through firewall, then look at back of engine area on firewall for it on passenger side. Everyone told me same thing, that the resistor will still supply power to motor, even if it's burned out, but mine quit after running on high for a while, and it was all I needed to replace to get everything working again. As I said, you'll need to replace it anyway right?

We have a 1997 oldsmobile cutlas ciera. The heat is working but barely blows and sometimes doesn't blow at all. We think it's the blower motor and want to order the part but need to make sure this is the...

This could quite possibly be the issue but prior to purchasing a blower motor check the plug that runs to the blower motor for a burnt or frayed wire.usually when it works intermitenttently like this the wiring is an issue. If the speeds are not functioning correctly the blower resistor is having issues check the plug to the resistor as well.

Heater only blow on number 4 and heat coming out

You don't list the vehicle your asking about but in general when the blower motor only works on the high speed the blower resistors have blown. The resistors are what control the fan speed, when they go bad only high will work. The resistors blowing is usually a side effect of a blower motor going bad, pulling too much current. When replacing the resistors it's advisable to replace the blower motor as well so as not to have a repeat problem.

1999 town car blower motor resistor.....maybe?

The Blower Motor Resistor is a common problem in your car but not for the problem you describe. When the Heat/AC won't blow on all speeds, the blower motor resistor is at fault. When air won't blow out of vents, bi-level, or floor the problem is the blend door actuator. This is vacuum driven and diverts the air to where you select. When air will only blow from one place (usually the defrost) then the blend door actuator is the problem. This can sometimes be corrected if there's a vacuum leak (usually under the hood in front of the passenger you'll find the vacuum line and can trace it backward to find a leak). If no leak can be found, the blend door actuator itself is defective and needs replacement.

Blower motor or resistor?

If it was the motor that went out then it would not blow at all. The resistor is the culprit that starts killing off speeds. It should be about $25 to $30 at an aftermarket store like autozone or advanced auto parts.
