There is a sensor in the distributor that tends to cause this problem. The sensor is the called the camshaft position sensor and it is responsible for the ignition timing. If you have a timing light you can verify that the sensor is faulty by checking the timing while the engine is acting up. If the sensor is faulty, the timing will be erratic or just plain wrong. In many cases cleaning the sensor will correct the problem.

To clean the camshaft position sensor: Remove the distributor cap and rotor. This will give access to a metal plate that covers the sensor. Remove the screws the secure the plate and remove the plate. Inside there should be an optical sensor that you can clean using a spray type "Sensor Safe Air-Intake Cleaner". Eye protection is recommended when doing this.

Unfortunately, cleaning the sensor does not always fix the problem. In that case, the fix is to replace the distributor. Since the distributor is quite expensive and the problem could be something else, it is recommended that you use a timing light to check the ignition timing for any problems to confirm that the problem is the camshaft position sensor.

SOURCE: 2002 nissan altima p0507 idle problem

I had the same problem before. after using the scanner i got a code number P0507. "Idle Air Control", New 2002 and up Nissan models like my Altima don't have an idle valve or sensor like older models to be replace. Here's the solution " Replace your "Throttle Chamber" the idle sensor is build in it, there is no other way to fix this problem. the throttle chamber is about $175.00 at your Nissan Dealer. The need your core or you will need to pay extra money. No need for expensive mechanic shop, you could do this your self. the throttle chamber is so easy to remove, four screws holds it together. I will take you about ten to twenty minutes to replace it. Please trust me and you will save big bucks!!!!!

Try replacing the IAC ( idle air control). They can cause the hesitations and can also cause the vehicles ilde to jump up and down. Also check for any loose vaccuum lines.

When i start it it starts fine but if it is cold it will not idle i have to keep pushing gas pedal

remove and clean idle air control ( IAC ). this is what controls idling of engine, evedently the iac must be stuck. if the engine is cold and the iac is working properly, then it should go up to about 12 or 13 hundred rpms then gradually slow down to proper idle. my 2000 malibu 3.1 idles at 650 rpms when warm.

My nissan quest is a 95. When iI start my car in the morning it idles really rough un till it warms up. i have to press on the gas pedal to keep it on or it will stall out. hen after i get it warmed up it...

It could be that. The idle may need to be turned higher as well. Did he say anything about the idle control sensor? That was what I was thinking when I first read this. You may have a clogged fuel filter or a vacuum leak also. If you haven;t had a tune-up in awhile, it could be the spark plugs. If you have another question, let me know. I am here to help the best I can. Good day Rhonda
