After retiring from 28 yrs as a field engineer, if I fix something and a new problem occurs, go back and check what you just did. Did a wire come out of the brake switch connecor? Was there a vacumn hose that got pulled off the other end? There was a proceedure to put the shifter in neutral before starting the engine.

Two things can usually do this: steering wheel turned too hard to one side or the brake pedal switch is not installed correctly so it is not telling the computer that the brake pedal is being pressed.

I want to know how to fix this problem the gear shift sticks in park occasionally

Modern vehicles have what's called a shift interlock system. This safety mechanism prevents the gear shift lever from moving out of the Park position and into a moving gear position unless the brake pedal is pressed. The components that make this happen are the brake switch near the brake pedal and the shift interlock solenoid in the shifter assembly. The brake switch is also used to illuminate the vehicle's rear brake lights upon vehicle braking, so it gets used a lot. This frequent usage makes it a prime suspect over the interlock solenoid for being the culprit. I'd recommend having someone check to see if you have brake lights the next time the issue presents, or if you'd rather guess at a repair, consider brake light switch replacement. You can read about how to replace a brake light switch here: https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-to-replace-your-brake-light-switch-by-spencer-cates

Why does it act as though stuck in park?

It sounds like the parking brake cable had jammed and possibly broke. I would lift the rear of the vehicle in the air and try rotating a tire. If it does not move at all the brakes are locked and need to replace emergency brake cable.

MY SHIFTER IS STUCK IN PARK

Helo, This sounds like the Safety Interlock controls are broke or out of adjustment. If this is the Automatic trans, you have to step on the brake before you can shift out of Park.

There is a switch at the top of the brake lever and it sends a signal to release the car from Park. This switch can be moved or broken by feet hitting it. You can look at the rear brake lights to see if they work and if they do not, then the switch is either knocked out of its holder or broken.

If you move the switch (under the dash) and get your brake lights to work, the problem should go away. If the switch is broken, replace it and align it so that the brake lights work properly.

Wont shift gears.

Look under the dash at the switch by your brake pedal. This switch must work for the gearshift to come out of Park. It is also the reason your brake lights do not work.

There is an electric lockout on the gearshift and the power comes from the brake light switch. This is how the van knows you have your foot on the brake.
The switch may be broke or simply loose and not making contact.

Car won't go in gear brake lights not working. replaced one switch on brake pedal already

If the brake light switch doesn't work then the solenoid that allows you to move the gear selector out of park is locked out, it is a safety feature required by law, jump the brake light switch with a paper clip ( verify the brake lights are on) and see if you can get it out of park, I am sure it will now come out, then either replace the brake light switch or the wiring to it, many times the wires to the connector of the brake light switch brake inside the plastic insulation, so the outside looks good but the connection is not there or comes and goes, I suspect this is the problem with your car. The solenoid I mentioned is on top of the steering column.
