Exhaust system light is on - 2006 Jetta

I own a 2006 Jetta with 59,000 miles on it. The exhaust warning light came on the other day. I also noticed that the turbo (or maybe some type of fan) is still running after I shut my car off. I am trying to determine the possible cause of this problem. I previously owned a passat that had the same issue when the car was turned off and that car began to have several different exhaust and emissions problems. I recently took my car to Sears for an oil change and the window tag said they put regular oil instead of synthetic oil in the car. I took the car back within 48 hours and had them replace the oil but now I'm wondering if they just pretended to replace the oil and never actually did. Could this be a potential cause of my exhaust problem. Any other known exhaust problems with 2006 Jettas? I've heard something about an exhaust fan problem with this particular year / model. Thanks for your help.

What you here running after you shut your car off is just your exhaust fan. Your turbo will not continue to run. As for the oil change effecting the exhaust this may be an issue. IF they actually drained the regular oil and then put synthetic then you should be ok. But if they just put more in on top then they may have messed up your Cat converter...good luck with everything

Vw golf se fsi 2006 30,000 miles. exhaust warning light on

If it is the 1.6 FSI model, it is very sensitive to the type of gasoline, it should be octane 97 or higher.
Very commonly, owners of this model use the 95 Octane gasoline, which seems to work ok, but the sensors in the exhaust (yellow motorwarning light) will eventually (can take a few years) clog up and you cant clean it or change the sensor easy either as you need to remove the whole exhaust system.

So either you let VW fix this for you (expensive) or you do it yourself (need a decent garage, equipment and a new sensor).

My exhaust system warning light is on. What could this mean? I have just had the oil changed and use regular gas. I always tightened the gas cap fully after several "clicks". thanks

could be one of two things either your cat is failing or the lamba sensor on the cat which measures gasses in the exhaust system has failed which will illuminate the light on the dash

Exhaust malfunction light will not go out...on 2006 jetta

could be as silmple as a loose gas cap or a failed fuel system componet, you will need to have the system "scanned" by a service station or dealer to narrow down the problem

A warning light that looks like a red cog with exclamation mark

IT SOUNDS LIKE THE LOW TIRE PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT. CHECK YOUR TIRE PRESSURE IF IT IS LOW ADD AIR THIS SHOULD ALLOW THE LIGHT T GO OFF. ALSO, CHECK YOUR OWNERS MANUAL FOR AN EXPLAINATION OF WARNING LIGHTS.
