i knew the voltage regulator was inside the alternator but i already replaced the alternator and i'm still having the same problem. i know there's a chance this second one is bad too but it's a small chance. would it be possible i have a short somewhere?

It sounds as the voltage regulator which is built into the back of the alternator has stuck. Occaisionally this even happens on new ones. Would suggest taking the alternator back as it shoud be under warranty.

Normally if you have a short in the circuitry it will pull down the voltage not increase it. I would check at the battery with a voltmeter and see what the indication is there. While at a normal idle if it is putting out more than 13.8 volts it is probably the voltage regulator. If the charging rate is in the acceptable range 12-14 volts at the battery the problem may lie in your gauge.

My jeep won't crank, it will turn over, but not fire, any ideas? I have an automatic straight 6, 4 liter 1991. I have replaced the coil and battery, has plenty of gas, but has been sitting for a couple...

Check to make sure the check engine light lights up in the dash, before cranking. If it does not come on, your jeep ecu is in need of repair.

I have a 1989 jeep yj. 6 cyl 5 speed 4x4. the batterie and alternator wouldnt charge so i replaced them both and it didnt make a difference. the jeep runs until the batterie dies. help

Have you checked to see whether the battery lamp illuminates with the key on only. If not then the fuse to is blown or that wiring to the field circuit is faulty.
Did you replace the parts with new ones?? You did not state.
No battery warning lamp no charge simple.

We have a 1991 jeep wrangler 4.0 and we changed the fuel pump and now the coil is getting no fire when i hook the battery back up

My 1991 Wrangler would alternate between no spark and no fuel. After replacing the crank sensor, the coil, and the fuel pump twice I started chasing wires looking for a bad ground. There is a black with a yellow stripe wire that comes out of the rear body harness between the front e brake mount and the front door post(very hard to get at)right above the bottom dash edge that should be securely grounded to the front e brake mount. As soon as I secured that ground everything worked properly again.

95 wrangler yj. has no power at high speeds

Have you had fuel pressure tested, and/or filter changed. Have you checked for plugged exhaust, such as catalytic converter? Quite often engine will also run a little hotter than normal when exhaust is plugged.

Charging

Most likely it is the voltage regulator that's going bad which allows overcharging. this is inside the alternator, so it most likely needs replacement. you could pull it out and take it in to most auto parts stores and they would check it to make sure.

Check gauges light is on and battery is overcharging

You might want to call the dealer.
I think there was a service bulletin to replace the connectors in the back of the instrument cluster
