Yes you can replace the tilt column with a straight standard column on an 88 Jeep Wranger, it is a simple bolt in swap. Make sure you don't pinch any of the wires while swapping and it cause a bunch of headaches.

To relace the key cylinder, remove the steering column shroud. Turn the key to the run position. Push in the small "button" located below the ignition cylinder and pull the key and cylinder outward. To install new cylinder, insert key and turn cylinder to "run" position. Slide into housing until it engages, then reinstall shroud.

Your trouble lies in the steering column. Because the bearings or mounting bolts are so loose. Sometimes it might hit reverse other times it may find another selection. All depends on the position of the column. the shift rod in the column needs to be stable to hit the correct gear.

Disconnect the neg batt,cable, because of the airbags. Remove the 3 bolt holding the lower steering column cover. Remove the top & bottom covers, If you have traction control disconnect the switch. Put tilt down. Remove the 4 screws holding the steering column bezel 2 upper, 2 lower, Tilt towards you to remove. Remove 4 bolts holding the instrument cluster to dash. Bulbs are removed by turning counterclockwise

this cars have safety feature on the steering column, there is a signal emitter that works with the key of your car, that will only work with your key on your steering column and it sends a signal to your ecm so you can start your car, so if u changed that engine u must have changed the ecm that does not work with the sistem on your streering column, u need to have reprogrammed your key and signal emitter on the steering column so the signal to the ecm is the right one, u need to take ur car to a dealership so they can do the work

remove coupling from top of steering rack ( make sure you mark postition of coupling first with centre punch so the replacement will be in the same position)
remove covers from steering column and ignition + anything else attached to column. good luck

to whom this may concern did you find a steering column. Are you replacing it in a 1987 dodge pick-up

should be a column shifter. they may have put a floor shifter in or put a used steering column in from a car with a column shift.
