Lawrie, could be bad fuel, fuel filter clogged, fuel pump faulty, timing belt faulty,etc., best to find a good Tech. have them scan for trouble codes, diagnose and estimate repair.

First, it is a diesel I am not so sure. As for a gasoline engine, there are 3 important things to look at: air, fuel, and spark. I would look at the fuel and spark, fuel filter, sparks.
I had this same problem with my 2003 H2, my mechanic found that the fuel diaphragm was cracked and this was allowing my truck to flood. If it was a cold start, the extra fuel would evaporate and it would start fine. It actually got to the point where I would stall at a stop light or stop sign at idle. The part was is the neighborhood of $175.00 and about 1 hour of labor to install.
The transmission control module is expensive and if the valve body solenoids went bad, then you didn't get a raw deal. Labor, parts and fluid are about right price wise.
You could not fix it on your own without a lot of tools and knowledge of the transmission.
I would check the catlic converter to see if its not blocked, best thing to do is to go to a exhaust shop and they can do vacume test or tempreature test.
When is really cold, and vehicles with non electrical power steering start for the first time after a good period of inactivity the power steering pump tents to wine, that is normal, some other cars or almost all the cars when they pass 100.000 miles develop a little metallic noise that goes away when the oil pump distributes and lubricates all moving parts inside the engine when the car starts first thing in the morning in a really cold morning.
Can't say I know more about that transmission that you but i will tell you this much, that I have been there, done that, and both times ended up at a tranny shop, too late to save it. &1500-$2000 later, back on the road. I hate to admit defeat as much as the next guy, but if you get to shop early enough, it might save you money in the long run. they have the scan tools to help if updates are necessary etc, but waiting too long, only proved expensive for me.
