Battery new over night goe,s dead 1996 Chevy lumina

I would suggest getting a muleteer with a 10amp current option. Pull all the fuses and relays. Disconnect the negative battery cable and place the multimeter inbetween the negative battery post and the negative cable. You may get a small amp draw for the computer. Start replacing the fuses and monitor the amp draw. If you have an excessive draw when you first connect, it probably is an alternator issue.

good luck.

How to replace battery

Open the hood of your car and locate the battery.
Disconnect the cable terminals from the old battery's terminals (negative/black first and then positive/red)
Connect the cables to the new battery securely - positive to positive and then negative to negative. The cable ends should not be able to move at all; any looseness can prevent your car from starting.

What is the negative battery cable bolted to and do I have to remove the battery to replace the cable?

The negative terminal on the battery is the one with the minus, usually the positive is red.
Disconnect the negative cable from the battery for safety. Then follow the cable to where it attaches to either the engine block or the body. They unbolt it and replace it.
You shouldn't have to remove the battery for this. Just don't mess with the positive terminal. You will have to reset the radio stations etc since battery is disconnected.
If the connection at the negative side is corroded, just cut it and reconnect it with a new battery terminal. A parts store can hook you up with that.

Drainig battery

You have either a battery with a dead cell that must be replaced, or something is on and draining the battery. Check the under hood, trunk, glove box, brake, parking, and courtesy lights. Open the hood at night and remove the negative cable. When you touch it to the negative battery post if you see a fairly large spark, something is on or something is drawing power. If you see a very tiny spark that is normal as it is the radio & clock pulling power. Replace the battery.
