How do I remove the y-pipe once I have dismounted it from the heads on a 4.7L V8, Jeep Grand Cherokee?
I finally was able to remove the bolts that mount the y-pipe to the heads on a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 4.7L V8. How do I separate the y-pipe from the pipe leading to the catalytic converter and muffler behind it so I can drop it out of the way?
you don't have to remove any hangors, but some times its easier. After getting it all off, it goes back on the same way. I prefer welding the pipes shut, but its not neccessary, just make sure the U Clamps you are using are good ones and tightened good.
if the converter is rattlin then it needs to be replaced because the element inside is broken. if the jeep still does not run try removing the catalytic converter to see if the restriction is too much. should start if the converter is restricted. if it doesnt maybe its whatever caused the converter to go bad in the first place
Place the transfer case in low range. Pry the shift indicator bezel out of the console using a trim stick.

bingo, we love jeeps, and we have vast free documents, almost as good as honda's.
Sig: I must ask questions first, I'm blind, and my tools can't reach, dig?
ruacowboysfa, Yes, you can do this without dropping the engine. The only problem you may have is removing and retorquing the head bolts because of the room constraints at the back of the engine compartment. Good luck with this.
The CKP sensor is bolted to the top of the cylinder block near the rear of the right cylinder head. Disengage the sensor wiring connector and remove the two sensor mounting bolts.
Carefully pull the sensor out of the cylinder block.
To remove the front rotors, you first need to support the vehicle with a jack stand. Then remove the wheel.
Once the wheel is out of the way you need to take the two bolts off of the backside of the caliper, then compress the caliper and lift it off of the rotor.
Now you should be able to easily remove the rotor from the Jeep.

REMOVAL - 4.7L The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) on the 4.7L V–8 engine is bolted to the front/top of the right cylinder head (CMP Location—4.7L Engine).
It is easier to remove/install sensor from under vehicle.
Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect electrical connector at CMP sensor (CMP Location—4.7L Engine). Remove sensor mounting bolt (CMP Location—4.7L Engine). Carefully twist sensor from cylinder head. Check condition of sensor o-ring. See picture for sensor location.
Pop the hood and look at the top of the headlight capsule. you should see a single 7mm bolt somewhere in the middle. remove the bolt completely it should be about 6 inches long. once the bolt is removed then use a large flat screwdriver and carefully pry the headlight capsule out from it retaing clips. once the capsule is out then you have 100% access to the bulbs
there is a bracket attached to the pipe just above the water pump bolts (this bolt looks similar to the water pump bolts). there is also a bracket attached to a long, thin bolt just under the valve covers on the drivers side. you'll need a long socket to get to this one. once those two brackets are freed up, you should be able to work the heater hose out of the hole in the water pump. of course, that metal pipe attaches to a rubber hose about halfway back from the water pump to the firewall, so you'll want to undo the hose clamp that holds it in place and slide the metal pipe out of the rubber hose.
i'm not sure what you have in mind, but this should let you accomplish it. note that there is an o-ring that fits on the water pump end of that metal pipe. it's included when you buy the water pump.
