When you miss a notch on the timing belt the engine will idle but you will get a cam positioner fault code because the cam is not matched to the crank,

Just changed the water pump on a 2005 dodge neon and now it wont start. What could it be

You're not giving much to go on. Is it a 2.0L or a 2.4L?
You say it won't start. Does it turn over and not fire, or does it just sit there and do nothing when you turn the key?

Both engines require you to remove the timing belt in order to change the water pump. The 2.0L is definitely an interference engine, and I'm not sure about the 2.4L. But if the timing belt was not re-installed properly, it will result in a no-start condition since the valves will not be in sync with the pistons and spark. Best case scenario you correct the issue and are good to go. Worst case scenario is that if the belt is out too far, you bent valves and have to service the head(s).

I have a 2005 dodge neon with a 2.0 engine. If my water pump has gone out will it cause my car not to start?

Yes and no, the waterpump is ran off of the timing belt. If the pump has seized then it will break the belt making the engine inoperable.

I was going to replace my timing belt for 2001 dodge neon r/t and the mechanic says I have to replace the water pump as well. Is this correct?

The water pump is driven by the timing belt. Do you have to replace it? No. Is it smart to do so as long as your already paying for most of the labor to replace the timing belt? Yes. Worst case scenario is you don't relace it and then 6 months later it starts leaking or the bearings go bad and you will have to spend the money to pull the timing belt agiain to replace the pump. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

Where is the water pump located. 1998 dodge neon

The water pump is driven by the timing belt. If its leaking replace it NOW. If the pump locks up, the timing belt will break and your valves will bent. and then the car will not be worth fixing. Replace the pump, belt and the tensioner. Dodge may have a redesigned tensioner and cover, buy all parts from the dealer.
