During you selection adjusting the steering wheel in and out and if you hear the gear moving but you steering does not move than the gears are prob. need replacing, worn out gears.

If your power steering wheel is no longer working; moving up and down, back and forth, and when you attempt ...
Jack up the vehicle, support it properly (not to fall), grab the wheel on top and bottom and check for play on both sides. Most likely bad ball joint but could be loose wheel bearing also. Do both sides on whatever part is defective as the otherside will not be far behind as having the same thing happen.
In case u had someone do some steering/ wheel balancing for you. It siimply means it was not fitted well or you need to service your airbags (SRS) rate this please.
I cant say for sure with yours, but for mine, the gear for the up/down action somehow broke and developed an inch long gap.
Anyhow,
google "acura rl steering column", click on any of the first few links
and you will get an idea of what you are working with.
Remove
the panel underneath the steering wheel. The motor for the up/down will
be right behind that facing down. Unscrew the 4 screws on the panel
connecting the motor to the column.
Once the motor is off,
check to see if that is the problem (it shouldnt be) simply by using
the tilt steering switch. If the motor is fine, check the gear it was
just attached to. It will be really greasy, but check to see if the
gear is sound.
If it is a broken gear, I unfortunately dont know
how to fix it. If more than one person is driving the car (as in my
case) you can finagle the motor onto the gear using the tilt switch and
you can move the wheel into a happy medium for both parties (using the
seat for fine tuning). Once done, and every thing is put back together,
disconnect the motor cord cause the wheel will be able to tilt, but
will get stuck again once it hits the gap in the gear.
Open the gear motor on the left hand side of the telelscopic assembly. Take the plate off held by 4 philips screws. Using a 10mm socket, remove the bolt holding the platic gear. Remove plastic gear and insert the reverse way. Over the years, one side of the gears get worn out.
it seems your have a power steering problem. it could be a simple fix by checking the power steering resevoir for proper fluid level. it also be that the steering pump is failing. the most troublesome is that the rack and pinion unit is the fault. first thing to check is the fluid resevoir if it's low fill to proper level and start the vehicle. turn the steering wheel all the way left and hold till you hear a light squeal, then turn to the right and hold till you hear the squeal. do this several times. this is to make sure there is no air in the system. you should be able to turn the wheel and it should be smooth with no hesitation. if this doesn't solve the problem, then you must take it to a shop to have the pump replaced if it is the fault or the rack and pinion............please rate the solution...thanks
