on a 2001 you need to go to any parts store and they can read the codes for you.. good luck keith..p.s. this service is free to the public..

How do i read the engine codes on a chevy 2500 1989 without a code reader
There should be an aldl (assembly line data link) plug under the drivers side of the dash. Ground the A and B terminals and turn the key to the run position. Count the number of times the check engine light flashes.

I replaced the alt and batt on my 2001 chevy 2500, now the red batt light flashes on and off. The volt meter reads normal.
Its probably something as simple as loose sensor that needs reconnecting, but drive the car down to any auto repair shop and they can do a Free OBD and tell you exactly the problem.
