1995 Pathfinder-Auto Trans: Shifting into overdrive acts up

I have recenlty been gifted a 1995 Nissan Pathifinder 4x4, automatic transmission. There seems to be a problem with the shifting from 3rd into overdrive. It acts up; have to let off accelerator and it will drop from 3500 rpm to about 2100. How do I fix the problem? Seems it should be smoother. Does this mean a transmission overhawl or just a filter and fluild change?

Hey D,
I would try the fluid and filter change..(probably time for it).. that usually clears up a lot of transmission issues!! good luck!

Could be a CV (Constant Velocity) joint, but they usually show as clicking noise when turning at the limits. Possible bad engine/transaxle mounts or bad modulator valve or leaking / disconnected vacuum line to same or manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor. If the transmission is computer controlled, the computer replaces the modulator valve which controls when & how firmly or gently gear changes are made... and, of course, it could just be good old-fashioned wear & tear. A tranny fluid/filter service sometimes works wonders in this area also.
As always, a reputable automotive tech is your best source of what's happening with your problem. Good luck!

You'll probably have to change the clutch plate on the flywheel. You'll have to get a floor jack, but a transmission jack is easier to remove the transmission. To remove the transmission you'll have to remove the tortion bars on both front wheels. Also, you'll have to remove the crossmember aft of the transfer case. You'll also have to remove the front and rear drive shafts. The manual says you should keep the transfer case from leaking oil out the back. but, you can just top it off after you're done. Be careful not to damage the seal seal for the rear drive shaft. Anyway, once you get the transmission and transfer case out (you'll have to remove the shift and transfer case levers), you should have enough space to remove the clutch plate from the flywheel on the engine. You should have an alignment tool to make sure the clutch plate is aligned with the crankshaft so you can put the transmission back on.

Take a look at Nissan Technical Service Bulletin NTB05-15b. Title = "Rattle Noise From Vias Power Valve Actuator / Intake Manifold Collector" This appears to describe your problem exactly. I have the same problem with my 2005 Xterra and I am going to try the recommended fix myself at home.

SOURCE: I have a 2000 nissan Maxima. trouble codes are:

Hi, the car is winding out due to a vacuum leak. Not sure if the misfire is related or not. I would start at cylinder 1, though. I would check all vacuum lines attached to the intake manifold, especially around #1. Replace any cracked or hardened hoses. If all lines are good, then I would check for an intake manifold leak. With the engine idling, spray some carb cleaner on the intake gaskets especially around cylinder #1. If the engine speed changes, you have a leaky gasket. If none of these ideas panned out, I would start checking the purge valve and other valves along the lines that attach to the intake manifold, but this sounds like a pretty big leak you should find quickly. Please let me know if you have questions or need any instructions, and thanks for using fixya.

1993 pathfinder w auto trans wont shift out of second gear.it does shift in overdrive mode?

It must be giving you a code as to what is going on here. It sounds like you have a bad silenoid to me. It will be inside ya trans on the valve body. Check and see what codes are comming up on it.

Won't go past 60 and it's shifting funny.

Internal GOVERNER IN the Transmission Will Cause this its Not Allowing OVERDRIVE Components to Engage, And This Transmission Has a VERY POOR Track Record for PREMATURE FAILURE See A Transmission Specialist and Do Not Be Suprised if They Need to Reuild the Trans. Sorry for Bad News!

Why does my pathfiner keep shifting out of overdrive when going down a flat road under nornal conditions

The over drive switch may be shorting or the over drive solenoid is damage and needs replacing.in either case this needs to be checked by an expert.Do not attempt to fix this because it may cost you an entire transmission.

Can 1990 pathfinder 4x4 automatic trans be towed with a tow bar

To tow an automatic transmission on a tow bar you MUST remove the driveshaft. There is no way for the transmission to be lubricated while it is turned by the driveshaft. The oil pump is in the front and runs off the torque converter. Hope this helps.

Transmission-overdrive not working properly

check the transmission fluid first .

overdrive allows the engine to run at lower RPM's , which increases the fuel
