the problem is the fuel door release switch in the driver's door or the actuator. I have seen the switch wear out but I've only heard rumors of the actuator dying. There is a contact inside the switch that may be touching or not touch when the switch is pulled. Compare to the trunk release switch. as for manually opening it... it is quite a simple system however no manual cable to pull. If you pry at the carpeting behind rear seats you'll be able to access that area it is possible to manually open it. It's always possible that it is frozen though so maybe try some hot water or pulling it into a garage if you have one.

SOURCE: 2004 passat door fob led lights up but will not

It has either lost its code or it has just enough power to iluminate the led lamp but not to open the doors, pull the remote and key part away from each other then split the remote down the centre to get to the battery, try a battery you will probably find that it will work, seen it loads of times.

The gas cap on my 2004 passat will not open

yea.. check the fuse first. secondly most possible cause is the wire behind the panel located on left foot wall of driver side. remove the that panel check for broken or connector connection and wire going in connector. push it in and try the switch with door unlock or key on on position. could be stuck also. try to open it(flat screw driver) while someone use the switch

Hi have a 2004 passat saloon and the n/s rear door will not open from the inside or from the outside, think it may be dead locked

Remove the drivers side door unit with window switches etc and clean the socket underneath and all should work like new.Removal is the black curved trim in door grip, prise&pop out then switch unit is free.
