A 2wd transmission on a 4wd truck?

I need to replace the transmission in my 1994 Dodge Dakota V8 4WD truck. I found a transmission for sale for a 1993 Dodge Dakota V8 2wd truck. I dont ever even use the 4wd so I am wondering if I can use that transmission for the 2wd and just not have 4wd? What else would have to be replaced if I did that?

It should drop right in with a new drive shaft for the 2wd. The frame should have extra holes drilled for the 2wd crossmember location.

How do I turn 4wd on?

    • 1 Start your Dodge truck's engine.
    • 2 Turn the electronic transfer case from "2WD" to "4WD Lock" to engage the high range 4WD, if the dodge truck is equipped with an electronic transfer case; otherwise, shift the transfer case lever from "2H" to "4H." The electronic transfer case is located on the instrument panel and is marked with "2WD," "4WD Lock" and 4WD Low." The lever-equipped transfer case is located to the right of your leg and is marked with "2H," "4H" and "4L."
    • 3 Shift the transmission into "Neutral" while the vehicle is either stopped or rolling at 2 to 3 mph to begin engaging in the low range 4WD. Turn the electronic transfer case to "4WD Low," if the Dodge truck is equipped with an electronic transfer case; otherwise, shift the transfer case lever from "2H" or "4H" to "4L."
    Tips & Warnings
    • Indicator lights will come on and alert you that your vehicle is in either the high or low range of 4WD.
    • Do not engage in the low range of 4WD drive if the transmission is in gear; you must shift to "Neutral" first.
    • Many Dodge trucks allow you to shift from 2-wheel drive to the high range of 4WD at up to 55 mph--consult your truck's manual to ensure that this is possible. Do not exceed 55 mph while engaged in the high range of 4WD. Do not exceed 25 mph while engaged in the low range of 4WD.
    • Do not engage in 4WD unless you are on slipper or rocky roads.

Need to find a repair manuel for 1987 Dodge Ram Charger transmission

What you want/need is a Factory Service Manual for the '87 Ramcharger, it covers each transmission in depth.
Which, if i remember correctly, there were 4 transmissions available in 1987. The Torqueflite 727 3-Speed Automatic (Found in 2WD and 4WD Ramchargers), the 904 Torqueflite 3-Speed Auto (2WD only), the New Process 435 4-Speed Manual Transmission (2WD & 4WD) and the Chrysler A833 4-Speed Manual (2WD only)

NEED TO KNOW IF THE AUTO TRANSMISSION IN THE 1993 DODGE DAKOTA V-8 4x4 WILL INTERCHANGE WITH THE 1994 MODEL YEAR

If they look the same they will. the best way to check is if you had the vin number from the truck the transmission was going into and the part number from the transmission, call a Chrysler dealer and have them reference the numbers to check compatibility.

I have a 1994 dodge dakota 4cyl 2wd and sometimes my gears wont go into first or reverse have to pump the clutch then goes in gear what could be wrong

it could be a couple of things. Your throw-out bearing, which does the actual shifting when you shift the gears. the other is the clutch is worn not allowing the throwout bearing to fully engage. When you replace one it is best to replace both because the transmission has to be removed to replace either.
check the fluid level in the transmission and check underneath for any leaks as well.

Going from 4wd tranny to 2wd tranny

If you're going to change out your 4 wheel drive for 2 wheel drive, you will need to remove your transfer case, front drive shafts, and transmission. You will need a new drive shaft, and crossmember as well. Junk yard would be your best bet for the parts, but it doesn't make sense to eliminate your 4 wheel drive. It would be more beneficial to replace your transmission with a used one, or have your existing one rebuilt.

2WD OR 4WD? To buy or ot to buy!

On the plus side, 2wd gets better gas mileage, is cheaper to operate over time (no 4x4 transfer case or any 4x4 components to wear out or maintain). With a good set of snow tires and weight in the back, winter traction should be ok. The mileage 63k, is good too. If u live in southern New England, as I do, u can probably get by w/out 4x4.
On the negative side, If you have a job that requires u to be there no matter what the weather, and u live where there's a lot of snow, then maybe 4x4 is really necessary. How many days over the last few winters did you REALLY need 4x4? Around here, I'd say maybe 6 days a year. Do you really need it for 6 days?(or however many for your area). It is great to have when u need it, but u have to justify the extra expense for occasional need.
On a personal note, my 1st truck was 2wd, and I hauled a lot of stuff to the dump when I purchased a run down house. After loading up to overflowing, I got stuck in the yard, and had to unload everything to get out. I swore I'd never own a 2wd truck again. But gas was about 45 cents a gallon then, and now, 2 4x4's later, I avoid driving the truck due to gas prices, (I do plow snow, haul firewood, lumber, etc, buts after all this blah blah blah, I probably have u more confused than ever! GOOD LUCK, and let me know what u decide. countrycurt0
