1993 Volvo 850 wont start...help?!

I have a 1993 Volvo 850 with 192000 miles on it. On hot days or when my fuel is a quarter tank or lower it will turn over but it will not actually start. Sometimes if i push on the gas right when i start it, itll start but i have to keep it on the gas for a minute. Also sometimes itll start fine but once i shift into reverse it dies. So I have to restart let it idle for a minute or so then shift into reverse. Also a few times it has just straight died when I was driving down the highway at 55 mph. I have no idea what this could be I know nothing about cars! Any type of information will be helpful or even something I can start checking and go from there sorta like a trail and error. Thanks so much for any suggestions!

    Thanks! So is there anything little i could try doing? fuel cleaner keeping a fuller tank anything like a cheap fix or pretty much have to just replace the fuel pump?

It sounds like your fuel pump is having a problem with getting the last of the fuel from your tank. The pump also has a strainer on it. The unfortunate reality with the 1993 Volvo 850 is that the pump and strainer are located inside of your gas tank. You can look for kinks or pinched areas in the line but from your description it sounds like the pump is going. It has to work much harder when the fuel is low in the tank.

    Yeah keep the tank fuller, your running low pressure for some reason. The strainer on the pump is a three dollar part, unfortunately it's part of the pump that is in the tank. It may just need that piece replaced. You might inquire at your local garage how much they'd charge you to check it. Your pump may be fine.

IS THE FUL GUAGE READING RIGHT???? ALSO THE FUEL PUMP RELAY INSUIDE FUSE PANEL YOU HAVE TO REMOVE 4 TORX SCREWS AND IT IS LABELED FUEL PUMP RELAY??? ALSO CHECK THE FUEL PUMP PRESSURE AND FILTHER IT IS (NOT) ALWAYS THE PUMP AND ALSO CHECK THE CAP????

How to replace a fuel pump on my 1993 volvo 850 glt

There is a hatch over the Fuel Tank under the carpet. Pull the hatch off, disconnect the wires and hoses and unscrew the locking ring. pull the fuel pump and sending unit out as one piece. Replace the Fuel Pump and replace in reverse order.

Fuel injection relay. It is located under the hood inside the fuse box. It is either red or green in color. It is one of the larger relays. This is classic symptom of these things going bad. The heat causes the relay to swell and not engage properly. They die out every couple of years. Usually the car will start again after it cools down.

My 1995 Volvo 850 will not start. I think it is the fuel pump. I tryed a procedure where I removed the fuel pump relay and jumpered the sockets for blades 85 and 15. there was no help in starting the car...

another way to test it
unplug any fuel line you can locate tell a friend to start key one turn only if the line squirts fuel then pump is working and it might need regulator
if not then pump is gone

THE RELAYS SHOULD BE UNDER THE RADIO ON THE PASSENGER SIDE LEFT KICK PANEL. JUST AS A REMINDER, A FUEL PUMP SHOULD NEVER BE TESTED UNLESS IT IS INSIDE THE TANK. it is the fuel pump for sure. If you can hit the tank and get it to run it is the pump. this drain back (hard start after sitting) is a fuel pump issue as well
