I believe that the entire dash has to come out but I haven't had to do one of those in a long time.

SOURCE: 2000 V6 Toyota Solara thermostat replacement

Just replaced one. It is on the driver's side of the engine. Follow the lower hose up. It is clamped to the inlet tube which is held in the thermostat housing by an O-Ring. There are three nuts holding the housing to the engine block. I managed to get mine off without the recommended removal of the aircleaner

How do I replace heater core in a 2008 PT Cruiser

I'm sorry to inform you that a PT Cruiser has one of the toughest heater cores to replace and there are no shortcuts to changing it. you must remove the entire dashboard which includes the metal frame, the steering column and disconnecting the AC lines. It takes at least 3 to 4 hours just to get it out. I'm talking from experience because I just did one about 2 months ago on a 2004. However, if you search YouTube, there are a few how to videos that give you a pretty good description of where to start. I'm a mechanic and it still took me an entire day to get it done, so if you're not very handy with tools I suggest not tackling that job...good luck my friend.

...i had an estimate done today to replace my

The heater core is located behind the dashboard. The entire dashboard has to be completely removed in order to replace the heater core. The time it takes to remove and replace this dash is usually about a few hours, thus the high $500-$600 pricetag, which I believe is decent.
