Can't turn ignition off after stoping and putting in park

I have a 2004 trailblazer, when I stop and put it in park the ignition switch will not go to off position. If I turn ignition to start position but don't start it and then shift out of and back into park the ignition will go into off position. I'm assuming this could be some kind of switch

Ignition Lock Cylinder Control Actuator
If the vehicle is equipped with a floor mounted console gear shifter, it has a ignition lock cylinder control actuator system in the steering column as an added safety feature. The ignition lock cylinder control actuators purpose is to prevent the steering wheel from being locked when the transmission is in gear and the vehicle may still be moving. The column ignition lock system consists of a ignition lock cylinder control acutator, and a park position switch that is located in the A/T shift lock control switch. The ignition lock cylinder control acutator contains a pin that is spring loaded out to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the lock position when vehicle transmission is not in the Park position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the Park position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column.

SOURCE: key stuck in ignition. cannot shift out of park.

If the Button does not work, You will need to get a Pair of Vise Grips and Wiggle it loose with those. It will come out. Done it many times before.

If it is floor shift it has a soloind under the cover not to hard to remove, you have to memove the whole thing bolt in front cupholder and inside armrest storage. once it has removed there is a soloind in there that mounts on the shifter. this goes bad alot. Push the button on the silver soloind button this will release it into gear. Hope this helps. ( Usually he black soloind goes bad)

SOURCE: Key stuck in the ignition. Position indicator

Hi there,
try turning the wheel to the right/left while turning the key in the ignition. You have to apply some force. Your car is probably outliving its road life.

SOURCE: Re: 2004 Chev Trailblazer won't shift into gear.

is the shifter on the steering column? If it is then turn the steering wheel left or right, it won't turn much but it will free up the shifter.

On occaision, when I stop my 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer, and let it come to a complete stop, and let the steering wheel relax, and put the vehicle in PARK, and turn off the vehicle, the key will not r

There is a cable that goes from the shifter to the ignition switch. Replace it and this will solve your problem.. The spring at the ignition side of the cable becomes weak and will not return to it's release position. Or it just gets dirty from to much dirt and water/soda at the console.

sounds like you need to try jumping it, you lost voltage and the btsi solenoind is probably locking you out of putting it into park and being able to turn the key back

2004 4WD Trailblazer didn't start this morning. No crank, no ticking but some power to accessories. My son tried to put window down and the radio came on. Later in the day, the radio came on...

I had the key stuck once. Make sure the key is in the off position. Make sure the steering wheel is not locked against a stop. The vehicle must be in park and try stepping on the brake. Try jumping the car with another car or battery pack.

My key wont turn off after i put my 2004 chevy trailblazer in park

your shifter linkage may need adjusting at the mounting point on the transmission. it may be off a little making the car's computer think you're still in reverse.

My husband turned off our Chevy Trailblazer without putting it in gear and now it won''t start and the gear shift is lock up. What do you do to fix it????

first make sure battery isn't dead because if he cut it off in gear then the switch couldn't cut the power off and it'll run the battery down and there is a electrical solenoid that allows the shifter to move if theres no voltage than the shifter want go into park and the ignition switch want turn off.

Won't start - key stuck in the ignition - car in park

Put a pair of vic grips on the key and pull the direction that the key comes out. Make sure that the steering wheel isn't in a binding position by turning it one way or another...it has a locking pin in it so it's not going to be able to be turned no more than about ..045 at most. If this doesn't do it, you will need to have it towed to a qualified mechanic to take the steering wheel apart to access the key switch.
