My 328i 2009 will not start. The guage shows a exclamation point. The lights and heater all seem to come on, but it will not start. It won't even turn over
If the exclamation mark is in the middle of a rough circle, then it means the transmission is in safe mode due to malfunction. Put the car in park and engage the parking break. Turn off the engine and wait. After 30 seconds, restart the car. If the light is no longer on, the transmission is back in normal performance. Take it to a mechanic to have things checked out. If the light remains on, the car will only operate in certain gears and driving performance will be limited. The car requires immediate attention from a BMW mechanic and should not be driven any more than necessary to get to the mechanic.might be speed sensor or transmission control module.

Sometimes you can reset the engine warning light by disconnecting the battery for ten minutes or more (be sure you have your stereo unlock code if needed).
That is not a good solution, it is better to diagnose and eventually fix the problem.
Have the car computer scanned with a code reader, the codes you get in return witll tell you exactly where to find the problem.
Here is the code list.
To get the codes the code reader must be connected to the car computer.
sometimes on Bmw you may need a Interface 16 pin Adapter, depending on the code reader.

Here is a good scaner.
Always better having the job done at a qualified garage.

It's essentially our "check engine" light.
Go to a local mechanic or auto parts supply store and have them read the diagnostic code on the OBD2 port. Auto parts stores usually do it for free. With the code in hand, they can look up the code to help diagnose your problem.
It can mean something as simple as the gas cap is not on tight to a serious malfunction. It's best to have the code read soon!
