Haw can i change the serpentine belt on my 2002 mercury sable? is there some kind of diagram that shows how?
There are also two serpentine belt types for the 2002 sable. The S and U type engine. Take the old belt with you the the parts store. As for the diagram, I googled it under images and about a dozen correct ones came up. Remember the 2002 sable is the same as the 2002 Tarus.
To remove the belt one of the pulleys (wheels the belt is on) will be a tensioner. It makes the belt tight. On most cars the tensioner has a bolt in the middle of it. You have to put a socket attached to a breaker bar on the tensioner and turn it to release the tension. However, you will have to have a buddy with you because as soon as you stop turning the bolt the tension returns. The second person will have to remove the belt.
If I remember right on the 2002 Sable U type engine the tensioner is a smaller sliver pully that is on the top and center of all the pulleys. This is on the passanger side of the engine if you are looking straight at the car from the front (so left side to you, right side of the car) It is easier to use a flat bar or large screw driver on the 202 Sable to release the tension and have a second person remove the belt. *REMEMBER how the belt originally was on the multitude of wheels/pulleyss so you can put the new belt on the same way.
*Be careful with the flat bar as it will crack and dent any other pulleys if you use them for leverage. So try to use the engine block as leverage instead.
The new belt will be slightly tight/smaller then the one you took off so it will require addition pressure on the tensioner. Also if you are going to put back on your old belt for any reason make sure it is facing the way it originally was. With a marker I draw an arrow on the belt.
It will take some effort and muscle to put on the new belt so be patient.
A mercury 2002 sable you need a T47 socket to turn the tensioner

There should be a diagram located under the hood right by the radiator.
