Just got jeep wrangler. 89 4.2. while driving it start jerking. the less fuel i gave it the better it was. Checked air filter and it was real dirty and oily. Replaced that, the fuel filter and Pcv. Was fine for two days than it started again
I just had this problem. my driveshaft wasn't sitting centre to my rear diff yoke. (a previous shaft drop took my keeper tabs out)
I have a 89 4.2 Automatic. It judders and shakes when I am in gear and on the gas. The shaking spreads through the whole jeep. It feels like all of my wheels are unbalanced but when I am coasting, there is no vibration. I think it may be the transmission. Like you're experince, the less gas I give it the less shaking. The shaking comes on for me after about 20 mph and the more gas I give it, the more the jeep shakes. Does anyone know what this could be?

The engine is cutting out. Seems like fuel
I also have an 89 Jeep YJ 4.2 L and when I got it two years ago it died on the way home over the mountain passes. Couldn't handle demand at higher RPM's. Crawled over the mountain. Took it to the states and noticed that it was definitely worse in hot weather. Near Sacramento I couldn't go 2 km's without it stalling (while in full motion down the freeway). Waited till evening then drove all night to Seattle. So far I've...
.... Replaced the Fuel pump, the coil, the spark plugs, the plug wires, the carburetor, and insulated the fuel lines against vapor lock. Battery was going dead as well so replaced that.
Have found the problem increasing and drive the thing less and less. Just replaced the Ignition control module today cause it was getting so bad that the new battery was also dying. Jumped started it and got it running, but as soon as I took the jumper cables off it died within 10 seconds.
I'm going to replace the alternator now cause I can't think of anything else?
Captain she's breaking up!
