Behind the side cover. You don't have to remove the transmission to get it, but it does have to be lowered enough the get the cover off. It does require removing the valve body. There are check balls in it that will fall out.
Sounds like it may be a faulty TCC clutch solenoid. Torque Converter Clutch. The TCC solenoid is located in the transmission valve body located directly under the transmission oil pan.
code p0741 refers to torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid--performance or stuck off===causes-- Wiring---TCC solenoid. I would consider replacing the TCC solenoid
"Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Electrical" according to: http://web.archive.org/web/20090416200738/http://www.x5world.com/articles/x5/general-information/9544-bmw-fault-codes-their-meaning.html
THE TCC SOLENOID LOCATED ON THE VALVE BODY. IF YOU HAVE RWD TCC SOLENOID BOTTOM PAN VALVE BODY IF YOU HAVE FWD VECHICLE TCC SOLENOID IN THE SIDE PAN VALVE BODY. RWD IS REAR WHEEL DRIVE AND FWD IS FRONT WHEEL DRIVE.
Possible Causes: - Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Faulty torque converter clutch solenoid valve
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve harness or connectors
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve circuit is open or shorted
Check your fluids 1st if they are low add fluid, and if they are dirty do a flush and a new filter. This usually will take care of it and save you money. TCCSV is a bit pricey try the cheaper route first. But it is located inside the transmission or on the side of the transmission. I dont recall exactly. Its something I would let a shop do though unless you have high mechanical skills.
