I noticed on my way into work this morning the my Auto 4wd button was on instead of the 2wd button. I pushed the 2wd button and ran for a couple blocks then, I lost all gears and had to coast to a curb. Switched back to Auto4wd and after a very loud clunk I was able to drive to work. At lunch I went out and restarted my truck and selected 2wd, all my gears came back but I didn't have time to drive it. Any ideas about what is going on??

the module is what i would suspect. and i do believe it is in the r kick panel. i've seen the button pack on dash go bad too, but module is best bet.

Some one told me to unhook the batery for half an hour then hook it back up and try it. Well it worked,no more shif problems.

Most common problem is the vacuum diaphragm that is so inconviently mounted UNDER the battery tray.The cable that locks in the front diff is attached to it and vacuum pulls it in/out.

Hello;
Are you getting the check engine light? If so the electronics may have gone out. You may not need a rebuild but you won't know till you pull the oil pan on the transmission and inspect the contents. You may also have lost the neutral safety switch. It is mounted on the drivers side of the transmission. Check those out first and let me know what codes you get.
For Ponchoboy; the clunking and hissing you hear are teminal root causes. Drop the oil pan and if it has a lot of filings and metal it is time for a rebuild.
Hope this helps; Rate me highly;

I have the same problem. It is intermittent and sometimes shows up with service transmission message. To get rid of it just put the truck in park, press the 2 high button and shift into drive while it is still flashing. I will worry about it more when it blows up. You can drive with the vehicle showing the solid neutral and it seems to make no difference. It has to be a wake up problem between the control modules. It only happens on start up.
