Grounding problem? I have a 1985 ss monte. The tach and temp gauges don't work. The choke works sometimes as well as the left blinker indicator light on the dash. Could it be a ground? Where is the ground from the motor to the chasis?

There should be a small ground wire from the battery negative to the body. It is usually part of the negative ground cable.
Many years ago, and your 85 could be in that range, a ground strap was located at the rear of the right or left cylinder head and grounded to the body to commonize the ground between engine and body.
Check to see if either one are present and let me know, we can go from there.
Regards,

Do loaded circuit voltage testing at instrument cluster connecter's . You need a wiring diagram so you know what wire's to check.

My gauges don't work on 84 monte carlo what should i do

If none of the gauges work, you need to check the gauges fuse and the connector on the back of the cluster. Each gauge is grounded thru its own sending unit.

How to wire up factory tach for 70 ss chevelle with gauges

The original tachometer was powered from the negative side of the coil.
I don't know how many wires you have to work with, but the one that powers the tach should go to the pigtail wire on the harness for the coil - dist cap.

check the fuses under the dash as well as the ground points. if the gauges aren't working (speedo, tach) there are more pressing issues and the truck may need to be gone through with a fine tooth comb. these things are good indicators that someone started to fix a problem and never completed the fix, just disconnected a bunch of stuff and only partially re-assembled.

just get rid of the damn car, get a Civic of the same year.

I was given a 323 once, unsiezed the rear brakes (the idiot left the thing parked with the e-brake on all winter), then sold it for beer money.

2000 Monte Carlo SS (89,000 mi)

That slushy brown stuff is signs of a blown head gasket. Have a code scanner hooked up to find out why the light is on, it will probably show coolant temperature sensor. Just out of curiosity, check the pvc valve (if your car has one), and see if it's clogged. If it is replace it, the crank case is not getting ventilated.
