Replacing the rear wiper motor on a 2002 olds silhouette

How do I remove the back panel and replace the rear wiper motor?

  • mlamda Apr 19, 2009

I was able to complete the job today. The back panel came off slightly different as it had 4 of the plastic anchors that were pretty difficult to get back on. I switched out the motor and everything works great. One word of warning it to remove the plastic sleeve and o-ring from the old motor and put onto the new motor before installing. Or, you can install it twice, like I did once you realize that there is a piece on the old motor that is not supplied with the new one. I found one on-line in stock, 2 day delivery $60 after my $30 core charge.

I have the same issue, and just did it yesterday.

1. remove the rear hatch door handle with a T35 star screwdriver bit
2. gently pry the panel up exposing the two bottom plastic push fasteners
3. I used a flat prybar with the notch on the fastener and pryed both off
(the push fastener has 2 washers on the top end so get the pry bar under the top one)
4. Now pull the panel off the side door latches and gently pull down again to expose the two back push fasteners and pry them off too.

You now should be able to remove the motor. The wiring harness comes off easily after you figured out that the only the small end closest to the wires comes off, not the whole "box". Insert the small blade of a jacknife crosswise in the space on top of the connector and pry up the tab letting the fasterner slip off.

I found a motor on the net for about $80 (part number1880686) but it currently is out of stock so I have to wait a couple of weeks to finish. I put the panel back on without the push fasteners and will wait the 2 weeks. Buick dealer wanted $320.

Good Luck

Replacing rear wiper motor on a 2006 smart fortwo

Open the rear hatch. You must pull off the hatch panel. There you will see 2 bolts holding the motor in place. Remove the wiper arm and the nut under the cover first. Unplug the wires going to the motor. Then remove the 2 bolts to the wiper motor. Install motor with the bolts. Replug in the wires. Reinstall the hatch panel. Then you can reinstall the nut and cover. Reinstall wiper arm. Done.

02 liberty rear wiper dose not work plugin has power changed wiper motor still doses work

There is a nut under the black plastic bezel that needs to be removed. Here is the complete procedure for you to look at. Its possible that your arm isn't adjust at wiper motor...

REMOVAL
- Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
- Remove the rear wiper arm from the rear wiper motor output shaft. (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL / REAR WIPERS / WASHERS/REAR WIPER ARM - REMOVAL).
- Using a small thin-bladed tool, gently pry at the notch in the base of the rear wiper motor output shaft bezel to unsnap the nut cover from the bezel (REAR WIPER MOTOR OUTPUT SHAFT NUT REMOVE/INSTALL). Be certain to take proper precautions to protect the outer tailgate panel and its paint finish from damage during this procedure.
- Remove the nut that secures the rear wiper motor output shaft to the outer swing gate panel (REAR WIPER MOTOR OUTPUT SHAFT NUT REMOVE/INSTALL).
- Remove the bezel and gasket from the rear wiper motor output shaft.
- Remove the trim panel from the tailgate inner panel. (Refer to 23 - BODY/SWING GATE/TRIM PANEL - REMOVAL).
- Disconnect the tailgate wire harness connector for the flip-up glass ajar switch from the flip-up glass latch connector receptacle.
- Disconnect the tailgate wire harness connector for the rear wiper motor from the motor connector receptacle (REAR WIPER MOTOR REMOVE/INSTALL).
- Loosen the two screws that secure the rear wiper motor mounting bracket to the top of the tailgate inner panel.
- Slide the rear wiper motor and mounting bracket forward far enough to disengage the two mounting screws from the keyed slots in the top of the tailgate inner panel.
- Remove the rear wiper motor and mounting bracket from the tailgate as a unit.

3 - TAILGATE OUTER PANEL
4 - NUT
5 - NUT COVER

What you will need to do is to remove the small plastic cap on the wiper arm by prying it off with a screw driver. Then remove the nut that holds the arm onto the shaft. Then get yourself a battery cable puller (from auto parts store) and pull the arm off of the shaft..

Test for power at motor.

Test for power at motor. If you have power, then replace.wiper motor. trim should be held on with panel clips that can be removed with a special panel removal pliers

Rear window wiper works for a few days or weeks

Check the plug is completely plugged into the motor. Maybe a bad connection in the motor itself. Also check the switch, try wiggling it when turning on.

2000 Honda Odyssey rear wiper motor replacement

You are probably correct in thinking its the wiper motor. You can do this but you will need to remove all the interior trim from the rear hatch first. Get a trim clip removal tool at a parts store...it will work much better than just a flat blade screwdriver. You'll have to remove the trim panels starting in order from the top of the door, then the left rear window side trim, then right rear window side trim, then the grab handle, and finally the main rear hatch trim panel. Once inside, removing and replacing the rear wiper motor is easy. You'll start by lifting the cover on the wiper arm retention nut. Remove this nut to get the wiper arm off, then remove the nut under neath which is the motor shaft mounting nut. Now, back inside to remove the other 3 motor mounting bolts. Don't forget to disconnect the connector for the motor wires. Reverse steps to replace.

It seems you may be able to get this out by removing the front wiper motor and the washer fluid bottle. The back bolt is mounted sideways. It seems like a lot of work to remove the plenum.
