You do not have to remove the heads or engine. You need a support fixture to hold the engine, then you need to remove the cradle (small frame that supports the engine on the bottom) The transmission can now be removed. unfortunately if you have the Northstar motor, then yes, you do. It was the main annoyance factor in that beautiful Cadillac motor. Make sure that if you are replacing your starter, that you pick up top end gasket kit as well, so you dont have to make a second trip, as you Will have to replace those gaskets
