You can look down the throat of the carb and see if the choke is actually doing anything. If so, that's really all the "cold start" mechanism is.

sounds like engine need some cuddle :) I mean, first thing to do is to check engine compression ratio. If that is ok, then make sure carb adjustments are correct and all fuel lines ar clean. Good luck!

The idle mixture screws do not control the idle. Is there no idle screw? If you have an anti-dieseling solenoid on the idle screw, make sure it is coming on with the ignition switch and use it to adjust the idle. Set the idle and then adjust the misture screws to maximize intake vacuum at idle. Readjust the idle after adjusting the idle mixture. The port at the back of the carb is not used in all systems. If you have a distributor with vacuum advance, make sure the correct carb post is connected to the distribtor. Adjust the choke and fast idle to engage when the engine is cold.

Hi.it sound a lot like a ignition coil coils tend to do that if its got a crack it Swell when the temperature rises

Check the fluid level for the transmission. If ok, seek help at your favorite transmission servicer.

Remove the old carb.  Bolt the new carb and gasket onto the manifold.  Hook up the fuel line and clamp.  Thread the throttle cable through the linkage and tighten.  Have someone hold the gas pedal to the floor, look inside the carb and make sure the throttle plate inside the carb is full open.  Next, wire in the electric choke, this should just clip on.
Now after the engine is running and warmed up...adjust the mixture and idle speed adjustments on the side of the carb.  Is this a two barreled cab and does it have a manual choke?

I am assuming that this is a NEW weber? If not, then suspect the float bowl settings (level too low, drop setting too high, bad needle and seat valve), or just too much dirt in it...
If it IS a new one, then disconnect to fuel line and run the pump into a quart glass container to check fuel delivery quantity... Hope this helps...;-)

so it will run for 3-4 hours till the battery is drained?
