I need to remove the CV joint from the axle to replace the Boot-2005 Toyota Sienna

I know of two methods a CV joint is secured onto a driveshaft - one method is a circlip that must be spread in order to release the joint and the other method is a round wire circlip.

The boot and surplus grease must be removed in order to find the circlip in the first example and in the second method a sharp blow with a soft hammer frees the joint after the shaft has been secured in a bench vice. The first method is more common with modern vehicles.

There is a third method where the outer joint isn't normally detachable from the shaft and the boot is either replaced by removing the inner plunge joint or by using a spreader over the outer joint and a special stretchable boot.

Renault used stretchable boots for decades and they have caught on and now are available for many models plus some sensible universal types and today even the physical effort of forcing the boot along a spreader has been removed by the introduction of a sort of air-powered speculum that will stretch the new type of boot enough to fit it over the outer CV joint.
Amazingly these stretchy boots are very durable and last longer than the standard rubber type, though perhaps not as durable as the semi-rigid plastic type.

It is important to assess the condition of the joint when changing the boot. If the old boot has failed dramatically and the joint has been exposed for quite a while, best practice would be to dismantle it and clean it thoroughly before re-greasing, etc.

The front left wheel makes a terrible grinding popping sound when I turn the wheel to the left. It also seems to be driving a little "weird", kind of "mushy" and loose. There is a boot...

That a CV joint you're describing. That boot protects bearing from dirt getting in and grease from getting out. You don't have to hit anything, they split with age, deteriorate and sometimes actually twist on shaft and gives the appearance like you smacked something. Replace or have someone replace CV joint and boot on that wheel and you should be good to go.

What's involved in changing a cv joint in a 2000 Rav 4? I have very good mechanical abilities & have changed cv joints before (about 10 years ago)

Easy enough job really, jack car up, put axel stand under. remove wheel - remove hub nut, remove pinch bolt - prise open the pinch bolt part (sorry cant rem name) pop out the hub from the lower arm. Remove CV join from drive shaft. Usually a tap will pop it out.. sometimes theres a circlip that need removing (models vary). Grease up new CV joint - put grease in new boot, pop boot over drive shaft. put cv join on (replace circlip if provided in kit). join cv to hub - attach CV boot fully. fasten hub nut, replace wheel.

done. might need tracking again or aligning once you do this.

Noise around the wheels of my corolla 2007

'Clunky' noises around the front wheels especially when turning indicates worn Universal 'CV' joints: this can sometimes be minimized by greasing the CV joints. This is a common condition if the CV joints rubber covers or 'boots' are split: if you don't need to replace the CV joints yet, you will need to replace the damaged boots with what are called 'split' boots.

Hope it helps: let me know how you go!

Knocking sound when i turn, mostly turning to the right, changed driveshaft and no joy, any ideas?

Sound like you might need balls joints, control arms..etc.. or the CV joint is bad. Take into a Service center Not a dealership. They only rip you off.. And ask for the front end to be checked for bad ball joints etc..And ask about the CV joints.. The boots around the CV joints that keeps the water and dirt out and also hold the grease can be cracked and will let the grease out and will let the dirt and water in and cause the joint to pop and go bad...Hope this helps

the joint is fairly easy to change. the hardest part is getting the hub assembly off. you will need a36mm sokcet for the hub nut.i had to use an 18" breaker bar to remove it.

Help car making some noise not engine.

Good chance it's CV joint . You'll have to get it checked, or at least jack side your hearing it on, up remove wheel,(make sure you use safety stands & emergency brake) and push & pull on shaft right at or near boot & see if there is slop/play there. If yes, time for new. Is this a job your experienced enough to do yourself or will it be going to a shop?

I need to replace the axle on my toyota camry

The CV joint boots? Hah.. if you've never done it before get a mechanic to do it. You'll just run into more and more problems if you mess up. There's more to it then just replacing the boot. You'll also need to check the cv joints for damage and repack them with high pressure grease.

97 toyota celica outer cv boot replacement passenger side

have you undone the main hub bolt, if yes, there could be two different items holding the cv joint on, one is a small circlip in the joint end, or the other is just like an expanding metal ring again only small. what i had to do to change my one was take the driveshaft out (easier to see whats there) then gently (rubber hammer) hit the CV joint it should then fall off to allow you to change the CV joint. I spent over an hour trying to get the metal ring off, then after taking driveshaft off it was changed and back on in ten mins. Or you can go to a motor factors or similar and get a boot puller, my opinion hammer works better lol
