'98 Buick Century has no odometer/gear selector display

Only the odometer and gear selector indicator displays are out. All other instrument lights work fine. I can't get my State's emissions test done without a reading of the miles on the car's odometer. I know the odometer is still working because it occasionally comes on and I see the increase in miles driven.

Can an obdii or some other scanner read the miles so I can get this $20.00 test done with out spending big money to repair/replace the instrument cluster? Is their some other fix that might work?

no nothing else can read the miles but the speedo odometer, OBD2 can't give that info or anything other than engine emission data..

The resisters on the back of the odometer fell off. they can be re solder if you can find them. That is what happened to mine. i stumbled on video directions on youtube. just pull out you cluster. there are 4 resisters on ther right top side of the of the PC board. if there still there they will be blackend and burned. just roll your finger on them and if they fall off easy there bad. you can buy replacement resistors for like $3 and same your self a $100 to fix or worse. buying a new one. ther resistors i used were 1/2 watt 150Ohm 5% tolerance resistors. and they can be bought from any raido shack. i hope this helps.

The short answer is no. The miles are only logged by the odometer. May have to take it by whenever it comes on. Finding a replacement at a salvage yard would be a cheaper option, as repairs are expensive. Good luck. Dont forget to rate.

Odometer and gear display flashes quickly, especially when driving

It could be due to the electrical board fuses going bad. I had to replace one for my odometer/gear indicator not long ago on my '98 Century. For some reason it's a common problem for Buicks. If you go to YouTube and type in "odometer repair" there is a video that will show you how to do it,if in fact that is the problem. But the gear shift indicator and odometer are all tied in to the same circuit. If you do try to fix,it really helps to have someone else there to hold the fuses steady whenever you are soldering the new ones in.

No gear indicator, replaced cluster, odometer and PRNDL lights on, but no indicator light for gears. ????? Swapped out instrument cluster, gears displayed on other vehicle, (both instrument clusters)

I had a similar situation. No odometer, fuel gage, etc. Turned out to be loose connection in the relay box that is closest to the battery cables. I opened the box and reinserted the connections. It happened again and I took a hammer and gave the black box a whack and it started working again. I found that when the car is running, my wife behind the steering wheel an me under the hood, that when I manipulate the box she hears a click under the dash and the symptoms appear and disappear. That is where I would direct my attention. I understand it is a common problem on this model from a Buick mechanic.

1999 buick century odometer light does not work

this is a common problem and the dash cluster must be removed and sent out for repair, cost is about $175 to replace the LED (Light emitting diode) display that has burned out, this is a faxtory defect as far as this expert is concerned, it is not a fuse problem.

Odometer light out on buick century not working

Sadly no, there is no fuse or bulb to replace. You either have to send the instrument cluster out for repair or replace it with a new unit from the dealer. You could also obtain a serviceable one from a salvage yard. Most shops should be able to replace the instrument cluster or advise who can repair it.

Odometer light out on a 01 buick century

I had this same problem and I removed the long plastic dash piece that goes from door to door (after removing other pieces which hold that one in place) and then tilt the steering wheel to the lowest position. turn the key and put the car in gear 1 then shut the car off -this enables you to remove the instrument cluster, which is held in by 4 screws. Unclip the back of the instrument cluster and remove the circuit board. On the board to the right of the speedometer are 4 resistors which look like tiny black cylinders -these need to be replaced (if they haven't already fallen off the circuit board). I was missing two and I just touched the other two with my finger and they fell off. I soldered onto the board 150 ohm, 1/8 watt resistors ($1.99 for a packof 5 at Radio Shack). This entire process took me about 30 minutes. I put everything back together in the reverse order I took it apart and my instrument cluster, odometer and gear-shift indicator works fine.
