How to adjust an automatic shifter

Customer called and advised that the ignition key to her 1993 Saturn SC1 was stuck in the ignition and could not be removed. Upon my arrival I tried all of the following: 1. Turn steering wheel back and fourth 2. Push shifter lever all the way in to the parked position 3. Rock the car back and fourth to see if that would force the vehicle into park so the key could be turned to the locked position. After all of the above steps failed, I lightly tapped the key with the side of a hammer to see if that would free everything up, but to no avail it would not. At this point I grasped the key with a pair of vice grips and rocked the key back and fourth and from side to side in an attempt to free up what ever might be binding it in there. I was able to get the key to turn just far enough to where the oil lights came on and then I was able to use a hook pick to depress the active retainer and remove the lock and housing assembly. I was able to start the vehicle but could not use the key to turn it off thus I had to pull the two fuses (battery & alternator) which stalled the vehicle. I checked all of the other fuses using a contenueity tester and all are good. So having said all that, my question is what would be wrong that is preventing me from turning the key to the off (locked) position and then back on again? I removed the ignition switch to expose the tail piece on the opposite side of the key and it still will not turn to the offposition. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you all very much for your time. Glenn R. Kraniske Universal Lock & Key

while in park, press shifter firmly even farther above park. Hold shifter and turn key.
The linkage may need adjusting. If this does not help the situation, then the pins inside the ignition are not getting pressed down because key is getting worn. You can try to tap around the ignition lightly with hammer to shake the pins loose.

Put some pressure on the steering wheel in one direction or the other this may take the pressure off the cylinder itself and allow you to do what is needed...hope this works.

My key is stuck in the ignition of my 1993 Saturn and won't move or come out. I thought maybe I had left my lights on last night since the car didn't start and the battery seemed to be dead, but then

Your ignition could be stuck. That happened to me on my 2002 Chevy Malibu with 150,000 miles on it. The ignition sometimes gets stuck and freezes up. You'll have to pull it out and put a new one in. You can use the new key or have it re keyed to fit your old keys.

1993 Saturn Ignition Problem

If you pull the ignition switch you should be able to turn it with a screwdriver and either startor turn off the car. If the switch won't turn than the switch is the problem. If the switch turns and the new lock cylinder still won't turn than you need a new lock cylinder housing.

My key is stuck in the ignition of my 1997 saturn SL can turn neither the steering wheel or my kets what can I do

I had this problem when my 97 sc1 was first given to me. It turned out to be in the automatic trans shifter anti theft switch. I just removed center console and disarmed it. try slamming shifter into park and see if it makes a difference, don't forget to push in on the key a little before turning.

11. Trans axle Codes present

Saturn Sc1, Sc2, SL1, SL2 Automatic Transmission codes when turning right after a reset or when hitting third gear. Intermittant dash lights dead, fuel pump failure and check engine light says various codes having to do with car starting in gear. Mine had a bad ignition switch which burned up the wires connected to the automatic transmission start satety switch. On the back of the transmission a black plastic device connected to the shifter cable. You must remove the black plastic shield from the upper wire to see if the wires inside are burned on the top connector that has six wires. If they are get a junkyard replacement connector and wires. Replace the ignition switch first to avoid same problem.

My 2000 Saturn SC1 key will not move or budge from LOCK. I tried wiggling the key, moving the steering wheel right and left but nothing helps. I bought a new cylinder lock to replace the old one but I can...

Is it an automatic? If it is then put it in park and jiggle the shifter a little or you can try to start it in neutral. A little bit of wd 40 in the ignition cylinder will help it out too. Hope this helped, keep me updated =)
