Wheels locked up on a Subaru outback 2000

Suddenly when driving it today, I was coming to a stop and heard a loud nose and it felt like I had slammed on the breaks. The front two tires completely locked up and will not budge in any drive. You can hear the engine running fine, and when shifting you can hear the transmission shifting fine as well. I was told that there might be a switch somewhere to manually kick it out of all wheel drive and that might help, but I can't find any trace of such a thing anywhere online.

May be you should make a diagnostic and you can do it in a garage or you can do it by yourself if you want to do it by yourself you need some tools and you can find some good ones here: spobd2.com

SOURCE: Grinding sound in the front end

I had this problem in my 2005 F-150 twice! The first time was covered under the warranty and the second time was out of my pocket! ( close to $500.00!) There is a solodoid u[pp on the firewall that gets water into it then it corrodes the lines and such. Ford dealership replaced 2 valve assemblies, 2 actuator assemblies, and the IWE Solonoid to fix mine. They claim the problem will not come back but that remains to be seen.

SOURCE: 2000 GMC Jimmy Transmission Whine

I recently took my vehicle to a transmission shop and they had to rebuilt the transmission right through. I was recently told that the transmission is a common problem in these vehicles. Sad that GM can not fix or recall the transmisison since there is a problem.

SOURCE: Hello, 1986 Toyota 4X4 Truck

I've seen a similar issue on other transmissions where the shifter slips out of the slots in the shift forks, either due to shifter bushing wear or just general wear on tte trans. It can usually be remedied at least temporarily by popping the shifter top off the trans and resetting the forks all back to nuetral and then reinserting the shifter. It gets jammed when two forks are trying to engage two different gear sets.
On one of the 4x4 sites, they tell you how to replace the shifter bushings, cheap fix if you are lucky.
Good luck.

SOURCE: very loud "rubbing " sound when driving only

you did damage to the wheel bearing i bet it sounds like a airplane sound. also if you steering wheel is off 7"then have front end aligned because this will destroy the tires and they will make noise.

SOURCE: 2000 Subaru Outback manual transmission rebuild

I would want to see that for myself, or get a second opinion. That really sounds suspicious since they claimed there was rust in a box that was mostly filled with oil. And I can't see any logic in paying a lot of money to fix a transmission that is working. Why don't you take it to another shop and ask them to change the transmission oil, and to save the old oil for you to look at. It would be even better to change the oil yourself. Don't tell the dealer what you are doing. The best thing would be to just pick up your car, as is. If it is a scam, they could put some stuff in the transmission if you give them time to do it. In fact, they may have already done that. I can't say it's a scam, but it sounds like it could be if you haven't done anything that would have broken off teeth in the transmission. And if teeth are broken off you should be able to hear it while accelerating at low speed in each gear.

The ABS,Brake Light,Battery light go on and off sporadically while driving.Does this indicate an Alternator failure or a sensor/computer problem?

yes it's most likely a alternator problem, usually the internal diode bridge breaks causing all lights you mentioned to come on,if this happens at a idle open the hood and remove green connector on alt.if lights go out you've found the problem

2000 subaru outback/ clunk when i put it in reverse

Turn off engine . get the vehicle on level ground. try to move driveshaft back an forth or,by rocking in twist motion,,, try to hear a knock,,,this would indicate a worn universal joint.either front or back, if you are good enough to discern which one is making the klunk, change both to be on the safe side. think they may be about 20 dol apiece.
