It is possible you are looking at the page for the 1994 960 and not the 940. The 960 had one (serpentine) belt. Your 940 has three. Hopefully chiltons has the repair order for the 940s as well.

I know it's not alot, but I hope it helps

you've probably fixed it by now, but just in case.

The relay is mounted behind the ash tray and pocket under the radio. First pull up on the bottom rail under the ash tray. It should come out. Now remove the black cover around the 12v outlet. It has a cover that can be pulled off with a small screw driver. Remove the two phillips screws (if there still there) and pull the pocket out of the way. Now you should be staring into a rather large hole.

I apologize, but I can't remember the exact position. I would suggest clicking the switch and feeling for the relay clicking. The Chilton's manual hopefully shows it somewhere.

Before you replace it I would put the car up in the air and check the wire that comes out of the bottom of the gear shift housing over the transmission. The wire rubs on the housing and grounds out the system. Check the wire carefully from end to end for tears or contact with anything metal. If there is repair or replace the wire and see if it works.

If not then try the relay.

Also, you can try brickboard.com for other fault tracing. brickboard.com it a great resource for older Volvos.

    I hope this helps.

I need to replace the alternator belt on a 1994 Volvo 940T, but can't get the A/C belt off so I can remove the alternator belt. Apparently there's an adjustment bolt on the compressor that I...

Hi,
Unscrew the idle pulley first.
Look for a small pulley where the a/c belt passes through. That is the idle pulley, the screw on the bracket of that idle is on the top side where you could adjust to loosen the tension of the belt. Before loosening it, loosen the bolt on the front of idle pulley.
Hope FixYa helps you out!

Belt pattern for 1994 850

Hmm, well that would really depend on which belt you got. I would start at the crank, go counter clock wise to the a/c pulley, up to the alternator, then to the idler, next power steering, and back to the crank under the tensioner, there was a longer belt introduced later, and IF you have that belt, same counter clockwise rotation, start at crank, go to a/c compressor, Idler pulley, alternator, power steering, then back to the crank, under the tensioner

Replacing alternater. jeep

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the drive belt.
  3. If necessary, remove any splash shielding for easier access to the alternator
  4. Tag and disengage the alternator wiring. It may be necessary to remove the alternator and mounting bracket from the vehicle as an assembly.
  5. If equipped, remove the front alternator assembly mounting plate.
  6. Unfasten the alternator mounting and pivot bolts and remove the alternator.
  7. If installing the original alternator assembly, push out the pivot bushing as illustrated.
These are the removal instructions per Chilton's Auto repair guide. Here is a link to help replace the drive belt when you're done. Just insert the year, make, model and engine to get the belt part number and the "Routing diagram".
Best of luck on your repair.

I need to know the steps for uninstalling, and reinstalling the alternator on a 1989 Volvo 240 DL.

Steps

1. Disconnect the battery
2 Loosen botls so you can remove the drive belt to alternator.
3. If it has a serpertine belt, then pry with proper tool on the tensioner to remove the belt.
4. Disconnect harness to alternator and ground wire if any and filter condenser if any.
5. Loosen bolts to alternator and remove alternator.
6. If AC equipped, not knowing your belt configuration would require to loosen the AC Belt also, depending if your alternator belts is the first one near the engine, then all belts have to be loosen to remove it. unless #3 applies.
Reverse the steps to put it back on.
